Tranny help.
Tranny help.
I have a 2001 SC with about 80,000 miles on it. It's time to change the tranny fluid and do some maintenance. Since I'll have the pan down, does anyone have any suggestions for improvements for the tranny? Like shift kits or anything like that? Also the rear differential cover is starting to get "saturated" with fluid, its not leaking, but you can see the outside of the cover is "wet." What do you think?

I don't have any suggestions, but was wondering if this will be your first tranny service. My 2001 Screw just reached 40,000 a couple of weeks ago and I took it into the dealer for tranny service and they told me in a disparaging tone of voice that it was supposed to be done every 30,000 miles.
All they do for the first change is hook up a machine which sucks out the fluid and backwashes the filter in the process. Then they pour in about 16 qts of new fluid and charge $179. What a deal.
On the next change they say they will drop the pan and replace the filter.
I did ask about adjustments and they said there wasn't anything to adjust, that even when the pan is down they cannot even see the bands.
The whole experience sounded strange to me. I would like to hear more from others about how to take care of the tranny.
My Screw has recently started feeling feeling like it "slips" when shifted into drive, especially while the choke is on and the RPMs are higher. Not sure if that is the tranny, torque converter, drive shaft, etc, but it is very disconcerting.
The tranny is always the part of Ford vehicles that concerns me. I used to have a Ford Taurus and I remember all too well the infamous 60K mile transmission destruct fiasco on those.
I also used to have a Ranger that I thought was in prime condition when I sold it. I found out recently that the new owner had to have the transmission rebuilt about a year and a half later.
I try to baby my vehicle and am always on the lookout for pointers. Let us know what you learn.

The soft shifting is lame. I generally start making plans to add a shift kit or a valve body as soon as I get a vehicle and it certainly goes in before or during it's first transmission service.
LT Dan- You're due to change your differential lube. The typical service will include re-sealing your leaking rear end cover. Clean and examine to find the leak source, including the pinion seal.
