New Tires give MPG improvement

I thought I would share this with the board.

I bought a set of 4 Firestone Indy 500 Firehawks (P255/70R16) for my Supercrew back in July '04. I have over 4000 km on them and have noticed aside from the better road handling of the truck, an increase of 1 - 2 CDN mpg as well. I was averaging 16-18 mpg Canadian and am now getting up to 20 mpg Canadian with the tires. Previous set were the OEM General Grabber AW, one of the worst sets of tires I have had on any vehicle.

The Firestone tires hold the road very well in wet weather. My old set would slide all over. I did a lot or research on these tires at the tirerack.com and they have lived upt to their reputation. I bought them for their rain and snow performance and so far they are excellant.

Good news!

Thanks for sharing! I went to 265R70X16s from the OEM Generals 255s. My mileage is about the same, but I don't get that good of performance on wet roads. I may have to look at the Firestones.

If you change from 255 to 265 shouldn't that change the distance travelled per unit revolution resulting in different mpg over time?

CAN gal vs US Gal:

My truck usually gets around (Mostly highway):
19 mi to 1 CAN Gal.
or
16.1 mi to 1 US Gal.

Canadian mile and US Mile are the same

Dpostman

EDIT: Canadian GAL also known as IMPERIAL

I had some 33" General Grabber ATs on my 2 yr old Chevy Step Side years back. They were some of the best tires I have had on a 4x4. I currently have some Toyo Open Country ATs on my 01 F150 SuperCrew 4x. They have seen snow and rain and they have surpassed my expectations.. I have not been off roading with them yet, so I don’t know how well they do in mud or rock crawling, but so far, I love them.

As for the MPG difference, that is a possibility based off of combinations of little things. There could have bee a bad balance, imperfections, low pressure, tread aggressiveness, or tread compound that when improved, could lead to increased MPG. The amount of increase you got was great! Congrats! Its not too often you can find an MPG increase in such an unsuspecting way. And with the way gas prices are going, it made the purchase that much better.

I just ditched my General AW`s for a set of Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos, and so far I LOVE them!! I went up to 275`s and they look SO much better, `cause they fill up the wheel wells!! The Generals weren`t bad, but they were starting to crack in between the treads, and pulling a trailer ,I wasn`t too comfortable! Peace of mind is a beautiful thing!!

Yes, there is a 1.8% differance in miles traveled, but you have to allow for that when you figure your "mpg".
