Unhappy '01 Transmission problem? Please help

I am at my wits end. My 2001 Ford Supercrew is very sick. It all started when I was going 70 mph on freeway....for 40 min it drove normally...great. As soon as I exited on ramp and stopped at light, it jerked really bad as if I had peeled off really bad when I took off. And there was a cop right beside me grrr. Anyways it kept jolting all the way home and while I drove it next day it got worse and worse and worse. Whenever I put the gear in reverse the reverse lights come on but the truck doesn't go in reverse it stays parked. Then all of a sudden it peels off in reverse. While I drive it it makes a rattling sound...like something is loose inside. And it will change gears all by itself as if it was possessed or something. At stop lights it shudders really bad and takes off horribly. This is my only transportation and I would greatly appreciate ur help. If there are any mechanics in Phoenix, Arizona area please help me!

Hate to tell you this, but you need a new tranny. I had this exact same thing happen to me at 95,000 miles and dealer replaced the entire transmission. Tow truck driver went to pull it up on the flatbed and almost launched it into the cab of his truck once it dropped into gear - scared the crap out of both of us!!

Thank goodness I had bought the 100K mile extended warranty - that one job paid for it!!!

Good luck!!

No I sure didn't. Figured if Ford was replacing the tranny, then I wasn't asking any questions. Guess I should have though for future reference. I will take a look at my invoice and see if it tells anything.

Trany Woes!

First, welcome to the site from Canyon Lake, Texas! Second, sorry to hear about the trany problems. I just paid $1200 for a "used" automatic trany for my son's '01 Dodge. I don't know how much a rebuilt Ford trany would set you back. I think I would have to have a local transmission shop check it out (most here will tow it in w/o charge, if they do the rebuild. If not you may have to pay for the tow.). My son's truck had 94000 miles w/o warranty, so he was w/o transportation, until he got it repaired. Good luck, it may not be as bad as it sounds

Super Crew Gal,

I used to rebuild automatics years ago for AAMCO, it sounds to me like the torque converter in the front of the transmission is screwed up and slips and then grabs. The torque converter is supposed to slip when the truck is at a standstill, if the coverter tries to lock up or not slip, then the truck will launch as if you popped the clutch on a manual transmission.

Wish you luck with your troubles. I'd take it to the Ford dealer if I were you, but then again if mine was out of warranty, I'd fix it myself because I know how.

If the torque converter isn't the majority of the problem, I'd be surprised.

BTW, my '01 4x4 Super Crew had tranny troubles with less than 20K miles but it was due to a faulty weld on the direct clutch driving shell. You might want to post your questions over on the tranny forum as well to get more opinions.

Good luck...

Later,

~DM~

Gosh thanks for your sympathy Retired...I am quite saddened myself I really am praying tho...that I don't have to replace the tranny grrr. And I appreciate the welcome as well. I'm gonna try some of Dave's advice about the torque converter see if that helps. Thanks for the replies guys~

I agree with Daveman's comments. That very well could be the cause of your problems. If not, take it to a reputable local tranny shop and have them investigate it.

Good luck,

Jag

P.S. Welcome to the site.

SCgal,

I hope that you can ask around to find a reputable place. The last thing that you want is some cheeseballs who do not know what they are doing working on your rig.

Best of luck to you again. And keep us informed as to the status of your tranny.

Take care,

Jag
