gas milige improvment

I have an 01 supercrew with over 175000 miles on it (had 149000 when I got it) the best mpg I could get was 15.3 mpg. At about 174000 miles the check engin light came on with rich bank 2. I replaced all 4 O2 sensors at 175000 miles.
Went on a trip to FL. about 3500 mile round trip. best mpg was 19.68 werst was 16.9 mpg with an average of 17.88 mpg.

Hey, thanks for that tip spork. I just got back from a long trip yesterday and noticed that my gas mileage has been getting worse by 2-3 mpg over the past couple of years. My truck is the same year as yours, but without anywhere near the same number of miles.

Question: how many $$ did it cost to replace those sensors and do you think an amateur such as myself could do the job?

I got the O2 sensors from carquest for about $50 each. I got the OEM style not the universal style (same price). As for the install I did the 2 on the drivers side and the back one on the passinger side in about 30 minits with a 7/8 in. wrench. The front one on the passinger has not ben done yet as I did not have time. Will do it this week end .

I've got the 4.6 and I get between 18 and 18.5 on the highway doing 65 mph. Better at 55, worse at 95....

I have the 5.4L 2001 supercrew 4X4 with 3.55 gears. The lowest MPG that I got was when goining up in the mountains in 3rd gear, no over drive.

I just recently did the same thing as Spork. Just replaced both of the sensors on the drivers side and the back on on the passenger (5.4L) but the front sensor on the passenger side looks ugly. More than I can handle. Almost looks like you'd have to pull the starter to be able to get at it easily. I'm almost glad I'm trading it in today... sortof. <Sniffle> I'm going to miss my baby.

Did'nt know if you all are aware that the 2 downstream o2 sensors are "monitor's" only, it's not doing you any good to do all 4, you need to just do the front 2, and reset the kam. (Keep alive memory) That ought to put things back to normal... Or damn close...
