Rear end whine

Angry Rear end whine

I know there have been a lot of post on the S/C rear end whining. I saw one post where they flipped the mounting shims under the leaf springs. If anybody has tried this would they post the out come. I have had a new rear end put in my truck no help, the new drive shaft no help. I was thinking of flipping the shims changing the rear end angle to see if that would fix the problem. Thanks Stan

My rearend whined ..... until the wife fell out of the back.

i'm really beginning to think that ford has a widespread rearend whine problem. my '02 s-crew with 3.55 gears does it. and my dad just bought a used '02 harley s-crew and his is even louder than mine. and it doesn't seem ratio dependent given that his has the 3.73 axle.

It seems to me that the angle is not set right. I have had a new rear end and new drive saft but no help. I was looking at the shim that sits between the leaf spring and the axel, I have heard the slipping this around will stop the whining noise. I have not tried this yet, but probably will in the near future, as I cant count on ford to fix the problem.

Incorrect driveline angles (pinnion angle) + or - will alway cause drivetrain vibration. If your not getting any vibration, then I doubt that the pinnion angle is incorrect. Gear noise is gear noise. caused by defective gear sets, differential housing or carriers, or improper installation.

I can not feel any vibration. I do have the whine @ 75mph, and now I am hearing it around 45mph. I was just reading trying to find a fix. thanks for the info. Very frustrated at Ford not fixing the problem. My truck has been to the shop 4 time for the same thing, but no fix. thx

Ford engineering is working on the fix for this so any attempt your dealer has made has been guesswork. I have an 03 Screw with the same noise and I have attempted 1 repair thus far, a driveshaft that Ford recommended 3 montsh ago, didn't fix it. I am at a crossroads now to decided if I want to give my technician 2 more repair attempts before I file lemon law, or if I want to be patient and wait on Ford. I do know from working at a dealer that Ford changed rear end suppliers this past year and most 03 Aviators and Mountaineers have horrible rear end noise. We are replacing rear ends in these vehicles DAILY and engineering says to keep putting rear chunks in until they get a fix, if....

Does this rear end noise only happen when you coast? That's what my '03 Screw is doing. If I brake or accelerate it goes away, coasting at 30 mph or lower give me a rear end noise.

It's the opposite for me.

My 03 Screw whines at 52-55mph, with light acceleration. It is the gears. Tech at Ford dealership said it was above "fords" excessive limit, and he will check it out. Have not got it in there yet, i only have 5k on the truck, and it seems to be getting louder. My Magnaflow muffler and K&N FIPK have not done the trick of "drowning" out the noise... Maybe I should of went with the LOUD muffler Anyway, I will post on what they decide to do.

For people having a whining rear end Look at your rear seal of the transmission and post if you find it leaking. I was changing my oil the other day and saw transmission fluid dripping from that seal. I have talked to one other person and there seal was leaking too. I have a feeling that this rear end is causing problems for my transmission. Stan

This is where I had my problems. I am currently on my third tranny. The engineers here (Germany) said the pinion angle is incorrect and dirving at higher than U.S. speed limits (autobahn) worsened the condition and the rear seal popped on both tranny's. Total replacement of transmission both times. The seal that Skemker is talking about is where I had problems both times. Prior to the catastrophic meltdowns I had NOT noticed a rear end whine or growl.
