slaughterj,

Not to give you a glib answer, but use the SEARCH button at the top right, type in ENGINE OILS. There will be as many threads as opinions on this controversial subject.
Oh, and by the way, duck because there's liable to be some heavy incoming on this post.

Heh, this isn't my first foray onto the net, and I'm familiar with the search key - the problem is, terms like this don't result in reasonable search results. Using the term "engine" will exclude a lot of the threads, and use of the term "oil" will generate a huge volume of threads.

kinda like serotta said, not to be a smart @$$, but you'll get a lot of results, because there are a lot of opinions/choices. This gets hashed over quite often. There really is a lot of good info to be found by searching...

but just for the record I use Motorcraft's semi-synthetic 5W-20 in my 4.6L with a Motorcraft filter...

My reasoning? It's the only oil I can find in 5W-20, and I've been told these engines run rather tight tolerances, and that the factory recommendation is a good one. If I could find Valvoline SynPower full synthetic in a 5W-20 I would be using that however. I have always used Valvoline both mineral oil and synthetic and always had good results.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Yeah, you're probably right about excluding some of the threads, but "oil" will only produce an error, the search function is set for more than three letters to be valid. That's why I put the "s" on it. That will get you started until the "heavy hitters" get out of work and get their opinions cranked.
Good luck. For what it's worth I use what the owner's manual recc. BUT, there is a school of thought on that one too! Something about meeting C.A.F.E. numbers, etc. I just figure when I go back to the dealer for a problem, I don't want him to have even the smallest bit of wriggle room.

closer9 said it well!
