First performance mods, gas mileage Q's
I installed a K&N Air Filter last August or September (maybe 2 months after buying my SuperCrew) and last week I installed a B&B Stainless Steel Exhaust I bought from one of the guys on here. What to do next? I love the mellow sound of the B&B (wish I could have gotten the stock Harley Exhaust I had to work but that's another story) and it looks great being all Stainless Steel but what I was hoping for was an increase in gas mileage. I get roughly 320-340 miles to a tank (works out to 13-14 MPG) with mostly highway driving mixed in with city (maybe 70/30%) and I was hoping to get some kind of noticeable gain
Any ideas on what to modify next? I'm thinking of some kind of cold air induction but I don't know if that will help any.
BTW, I've been running Mobile 1 since my third oil change.

Gas Mileage
The new air intake should make a differance, but I'm not sure how much. There are a lot of them out there. The Volant looks to be the only one (I've seen) that uses a "cold air box" to eliminate some of the "under hood" heat. There may be others, but I've not seen them. I've been getting on avg. 16 to 17mpg with 50/50 city/highway driving. I've got an '02 S'crew; 5.4L; 2wd; 3.55 rear; "stock". Good Luck

The Harley exhaust I had was off of an '02 and I've heard that earlier years where similar to ours that nothing would have had to have been hacked up. Not sure if it's different or not for the 4.6.
Any have any experience with the Mac Air Induction Kit?

Found this Kit and a throttle body spacer for $100. Opinions on the kit and price?
Micro Tuner
You will get 2-3 more mpg with a Micro Tuner. Only problem with that is that you have to run Premium fuel. But, you will also have better shift points that you will really notice.
From what I've read in FTW, this is probably the best mod you can do for performance. And if you don't like it, you can always go back to the original programming and sell the Tuner.
I get 19mpg on the highway with the Tuner and love the performance gains.
Note: I mistakenly called the Micro Tuner a Super Tuner. Edited to correct brain flactuation.

Hmmmmmmm.....
I bought a Micro Tuner for my 03 SCrew 5.4 4x4.
Mike Troyer tells everyone that mileage is not the reason to buy it. Performance IS. If you get some extra mileage it should be considered frosting on the cake.
My mileage has gone up about .5 MPG in the city and I haven't yet had the chance to test it on the hiway so I don't know about that. Hiway mileage is where I expect to get the most improvement in mileage from being able to stay in higher gears more of the time due to more power. One can't help but hope for better mileage.
My truck does drive much nicer with the SuperChips program and I was able to optimize/correct my speedometer as well. The responsiveness is nice and the shifting is smooth but firm.
If you buy a Micro Tuner and use it on your truck, . . . it is not useable on any other vehicle. It is tied to the VIN number of YOUR truck. It can be used on other vehicles only for reading and clearing diagnostic codes. And yes you do have to use Premium gas to gain the anticipated 10% horsepower and 13% torque improvement. But, the extra $4.00 per fill up is worth the performance. I still can't do a wheel stand, but the improvement is what I would call significant (meaning easy to feel).
Just my two cents.

I have the SuperChips MicroTuner also. It really "woke my truck up". It shifts better, sounds better, runs better....it is the programming the truck *should* have had from the factory. BUT.... the icing on the cake is that, in addition to the performance gains....I ALSO have gotten efficiency gains! I get about 2 m.p.g. better whether commuting or interstate! What other mod can give you better performance AND better mileage at the same time?
With the present prices of gasoline ($1.49 for reg., $1.69 for premium), it costs me 11.6 cents-per-mile to drive without the MicroTuner programming and regular gasoline, and 11.2 cents-per-mile to drive with the MicroTuner programming and premium gasoline.
The higher the price of gas, the better the Microtuner looks! (As long as the cost delta remains ~20cents between reg. and prem. gasoline)
I have checked every tank of gas since I have had this truck and even if the cost-per-mile was reversed, the better "driveability" of the truck with the SuperChips Microtuner is well worth it. Especially since it is actually less costly for me to drive a "performance" truck than to drive a "stock" truck.
This is the best single mod you can do for our trucks as far as "bang-for-the-buck"
As always...JMHO

I neglected to mention in my first post in this thread that there is supposed to be a new Microtuner just released by SuperChips. It has the extra option of a program that does not require premium gasoline. I have no experience with this tuner nor have I heard of anyone else's experiences. (it is a very recent release) But even if your mileage stays the same, the improved Automatic tranny characteristics is value enough in my book!
Good luck

Right on RebelYell,
The new model has 3 performance settings. One requires only 87oct and gets you minimal HP and TQ, the next 2 require premium 93-94. Towing is not recommended for the setting giving you the most performance, but I believe you can tow with the lower ones. FTW had a group buy on these recently and if i can remember, the release date is either late this month or early Oct.
