Question Changing the Interior

Hi, All! First time posting here . . . . Great Board! You've answered a ton of my questions already, before I had a chance to make a pain in the behind out of myself!

Anyway, I have a chance to snag a fully loaded 2003 4x4/5.4 with 5000 easy miles on it for a song . . . . problem is I don't really like the bench seating layout. How much trouble (and money) would it be to change the interior over to Captains Chairs, etc.? Is it bolt in? Will I need to pull the old carpet and install new? Will I need to drill holes for sliders, etc.? What about belts and the what not?

Thanks!

Tim

I'm not sure, I don't think you will have to change the carpet. I think you will just have to buy a seat for the passenger side, and the center console. I've looked a little, but not too hard. If you find a place to trade seats, or a cheap place to buy seats, please let us know.

Good Luck, and welcome to the boards.

Thanks. Mostly I am curious as to whether I would have to drill new holes in the floor, etc. If all would just bolt right in, that would be great! I was hoping I could just go to a dealer and buy the new interior (both seats and center console) and bolt it right in . . . . put the remnants on ebay and see what I could come up with.

By the way, that is a SWEET truck . . . . if I were ordering one new, that would be it I think!

First and foremost, welcome to the *BEST* Ford Truck site on the net! We're glad to have you aboard!

About your seats...

I don't think it's a 'plug and play' scenario. I believe that the bolt pattern is different and thus, yes, you would have to drill more holes and, in my opinion, not get the saftey factor that Ford designs into the vehicle...

I'm not sure 110% but, I'm sure if I missed the mark that someone will be along shortly to straighten it all out.

Keep us posted and, again, welcome to f150online.com!

I was afraid that new holes would need to be drilled . . . and new carpet and new . . . . . you know how it goes. I suppose the safety factor could be avoided by using different sliders bolted into the factory holes or by welding backing plates underneath . . . but that, I think is too much for this! Perhaps I'll just show some patience and wait until I find the truck and deal I want . . . .
Thanks!
I'll be around . . . . .

Hello

I recently changed the 60/40 seat in my 03 Supercrew. I had the bench seat in the front and I did not like the console being so small and it traveled with the passenger seat so the arm rest was never where I wanted it when I drove. The swap you are speaking of is very SIMPLE. I purchased the front buckets, console and the rear seat off of ebay from an 01 Supercrew. I had them upholstered in a vinyl that looks and feels like leather but it won't crack and wrinkle like leather for $ 500.00. (Front and Rear) The rear seat is just a bolt in installation and very easy to do. If you are asking why I replaced my back seat, the reason is the 01 Supercrew back seat does not have headrests and it eliminates the blind spot for me that the 03 rear seats create. (Person preference I guess) The front seats are very simple to change out. The passenger seat is like a bucket and just bolts in with the four bolts that come out of the old one. Pull your front seats out and pull the door sill trim pieces up and pull the carper out of the way. You will see mounting points in the floor that have black caps in them and you just remove the caps and go to Sears and buy the correct thread tool and thread the holes. It will take you 5 minutes each...it is very simple. Then lay the carpet back down and with a utility knife cut a small hole in the carpet over the hole you just threaded and your set. I DID NOT have to replace the carpet in my truck since the console covered up the original mounting holes in the carpet where the 60/40 seat bolted in. When I got my seats and console, the console did not come with the mounting hardware, but I went to Lowe's and bought the metric bolts and washers in the specialty bolt section and bolted it to the floor. The console bolts to some of the existing holes from the 60/40 seat. This is the best modification I have ever made to a vehicle. It was VERY easy and the additional storage you get with the new console makes it very rewarding. I think the bucket seats are just as comfortable as the 60/40 seats. I have two little boys and the missing headrests in the rear are not a factor at this time and won't be for a while.

I hope this helps.

Thanks! That was just the answer I was hoping to hear! Cost was just about what I was hoping for too! Now all I need to do is find another truck that will serve my purposes! The one I was looking at only had a 4.6 . . . .
