Angry Moon Roof Problem

I have a 2001 supercrew with 40K on it. I love the truck and the moon roof has worked great until the other day it wouldn't close. I took it to the dealer and they said this is common and there is no way to close it. It will need a new motor and track assembly for which there is a recent service bulletin from ford addressing this problem where an improved assembly is available. At a cost of over $1,600, thank goodness for an extended warranty.

I am wondering if anyone has experienced this problem. It sounds like it is common with the 2001 models.

ARGH... here's something I haven't heard much about but, having a moonroof in my 2001 as well, it will DEFINATELY be something that I watch...

Anyone have the TSB #?

This happened to me on my 98 Expedition. Not sure if the info is relevent or not on the F150. I copied this from another forum where I posted this after the sunroof on my Expedition wouldn't close and I repaired it myself, so FWIW here ya go.

When closing my moonroof the other day I heard a clunking noise and the glass stopped moving. Oh crap!, It's friday afternoon at 4pm, I stop by my local stealer to ask if their is a way to just manually close my moon roof until the next work week. Of course the answer is no, there is no way, and the repair is going to be VERY expensive. After I got home and had a beer to cool off my frustration a bit, I decided to look at it myself. It's gonna rain all weekend and since my "other" vehicle is a motorcycle, I am fresh out of options. There is a square cover about a foot back from the glass in the headliner. It has two push/pull connectors on the front edge that pull down, then you can slide the cover forward to remove it. As I did that, three bolts fall out ont the floor. Hmmm..that can't be good. I look closer and they are the three mounting bolts for the motor! I put them back in (they are torx) and figure I got this fixed. Wrong, it moves forward, then stops. Apparently the timing is now off due to the loose motor allowing the gears to jump. I noticed that in the middle of the shaft for the motor there is a female hex that appears to allow a hex key to be inserted. I find the right allen wrench and turn it...and the glass slowly glides into place! I can't believe the dealers don't know this. Well, to make a long story even longer, after I learned this and looked at things even closer, I found that there is a clear plastic window on the motor that can be popped out, and you can then see the timing marks on the motor. With the glass in the closed position, I pried up the plastic cover (there are little clips) and this allowed the gears to disengage. I pushed the switch and cycled it thru until the motor gears were in the position that the glass should be closed, snapped the cover back on that also re engaged the gears, and checked the timing marks, and it was fixed. Maybe an hour of total effort, and the dealer wants to charge me BIG bucks. Moral of the story, remove your cover and check those mounting bolts for tightness. If they wouldnt have fallen out, this wouldnt have happened. Sorry for the long explanation, but this may help someone in the future.

haven't had a problem with the functionality of the moonroof, but I did have some metal support piece come loose in there, and was just sliding around in the cavity of the roof....had it fixed, and no problems since.

If you don't want to fix this yourself, try going to a local Webasto sunroof installer. The F150 roof is (99% sure) is similar to a Hollandia/Webasto model 749, except that the roof is designed for factory install, not after market.

Broken MoonRoof

Yeap; I had the same thing. The dealer tried to tell me I caused it by "slamming" the shade cover back and breaking the stops which caused the glass to jump track. Bull****, NOBODY slammed anything on my truck! Thankfully we had just that week purchashed the extended warrenty. THEN the dealer tried to tell us the $1200 repair was not coverd by the warrenty. After much run around they figured out some one had typed in the wrong part number ...blah blah and the repair was covered. Am planning to trade for a '05 next month. Will be sure to keep the extended warrenty on the new one. I love my SCrew and I love that Moonroof. In AZ we use them to vent the hellish heat that builds up in a parked truck. I'll never have a vehicle with out the moon roof now that I"ve had one.

I read your letter to Channel 3, interesting and well put together. I remember the topic some time back. What was the outcome?

Channel 3 On Your Side Outcome

That was all pretty disappointing. Ch3 decided it wasn't an issue of customer fraud; just a misunderstanding between a seller and a buyer. We never could get anyone to understand this fraud was perpetrated on everyone that purchased a F150 from Ford in 2001. As you know by now, as some point Ford finally figured it out and sent us all a notice with the choice of $500 off on a new truck or a new radiator in the truck we already had. We took the new radiator as I'm sure most folks did. $500 off a new truck is a drop in the bucket but having the $300 dollar radiator we ordered and paid for was far more meaningful and useful. Overall it was a pretty sour experience. Ford lost a lot of customer good will over it I'm sure.

At least you got your radiator...i bought my truck on may 30 2001 and was not included in the settlement because they supposedly had already changed the descriptions of what a tow package contains...
