Digital Compass question
Very interesting idea... I don't thing there'd be much of a chance of doing it and keeping it with the same look but, money definately talks...
Me, I don't want to give up the compass... I've become dependant upon it as I typically want to know what direction I'm going. It's actually a useful device for me...

I wouldn't want a replacement to the compass, maybe just an additional click of the 'SELECT' button will bring up a clock, although highly doubtful, its a damn good idea to say the least.

That's a good idea. I miss the one in my old '00 F-350 that had the outside air temp, distance to empty, avg MPG and compass. We also had a mod that would keep it from dimming when you turned the headlights on. Has anyone done that with this unit?
I understand the outside air temp is on the HVAC unit but like you all, it would be nice to have more options on the "Select" button.
Does anyone know what the Expeditions have? That might be a place to look at since I would think they have somewhat of the same computer.

I found this on FordTruckWorld.com from user "trueblue":
-------------------------------------
For a 2000,2001,2002 and 2003 F-150 and they all have this layout.
2001 Ford F150 OVERHEAD CONSOLE
PIN#.. CIRCUIT/COLOR... CIRCUIT FUNCTION
1.....294 (WH/LB).............Voltage in Run (overload protected)
2.....875 (BK/LB)..............Ground
3.....679 (GY/BK).............Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) +
4......19 (LB/RD)...............Instrument illumination, feed
5.....767 (LB/OG).............Ambient air temperature sensor (19E702), feed
6.....470 (PK/BK).............Sensor signal return (reference/ground)
(SuperCrew)
7.....*53 (BK/LB)..............Interior lamp relay, switched power, output
8.....*705 (LG/WH)...........Illumination
9.....*57 (BK)...................Ground
10.....*1173 (BN/OG)........Roof opening panel switch (15B691), common
11.....*1174 (WH/RD).......Roof opening panel switch (15B691), Open, signal
12.....*1175 (TN/RD).........Roof opening panel switch (15B691), closed, signal
NOTE:
Pins with a * indication is for a SuperCrew Style and sunroof option
Only the first 6 pins are used on a Regular F-150

Most of these wires can be accessed behind the passenger's side kickpanel on a black 16-pin
connector, pin layout below..

how can those wiring diagrams help? i am bad at reading them
The ones on the expedition tell you how many miles you have left to empty and how many mpg you get and then the compass. no temperature on there because it is on the digital climate control.

I too have wondered why Ford didn't put the whole computer option in the thing like on the SD's. My Buddy had a Dodge that had all of the computer options and he didn't pay near as much for it as I did my truck. I would be interested to find out if this could be retrofitted. Will watch the boards to see if you guys come up with anything.
I don't use the compass at all. My truck is only two months old so I'm not ready to hack too much up.
But I look at that housing and wonder if the internals can be removed, a hole cut on the front of the housing, and a radar detector stuck up there. Using the green lens in front, I'm sure the reds and orange indicators on a detector will show through well enough. I realize that it would be ineffective from rear radar, but it would be most stealthy. I'm fairly certain any officer that pulls you over will give you a ticket if he sees a detector, instead of just a warning.
Guess I'm having a wet mod dream here...
