Specifically what types of racks are you talking about?

The only ones that I'm familar with that mount on the back there are the ones that mount on the ball of the truck and, in that case, no you couldn't tow because your rack would be occupying your ball.

If there's something else that is available, I'm not familar with it... then again, I might be totally off the mark on what you're talking about...

Hi Mikef150, thanks for the info. I was told this type of rack cuts your tongue weight in half. As well it can increase sway. Have you had any problems with either? With the truck and our relatively lite trailer we probably would not have any problems.
Thanks again JR

If you're towing a rv/camper, you might want to look at Camping World. My wife and I carry our bikes with a bumper mount hitch on the RV. The hitch only cost about $70 from one of their stores and works just fine. If I remember correctly, they have 2,4, or 6 bike models. They also have the receiver type racks if your RV has one.

Not sure if this is what you meant, but here's a pic of the hitch rack I have - it allows you to carry up to 4 bikes and still tow up to 6000 lbs (600 lb tongue weight).

I have never seen one of those... interesting.

Now I see what you're talking about...

Bed racks?

I'm wanting to carry my bikes in the bed. Yakima offers several options by which to do this. Looking for opinions on the Yakima in the bed (can't wait to see where you guys take that!) options or any other brands/styles. Would prefer to stay away from the hitch mounts.

Thanks!

I have several bikes that I carry in my bed. I just cut two 2x4's to a length that will fit in the slot at the front and back of the bed. Then I drilled several 1/4" holes in boards, and bought some bike tight mounts (about 20 bucks apiece) and got carraige bolts with wing nuts and mount them that way. If this isn't a clear enough explaination, let me know and I'll try to get a few pictures.

Thanks serotta!

Would you mind a picture or two? I am the world's worst when it comes to visualizing things (unless she has two very long legs! ok, I digress). Just a shot of the setup in your bed and maybe a closeup of the "bike tight mounts" you referred to!

If not too much trouble! Thanks!

Post 'em here or shoot 'em to me via e-mail

I have a 5 bike 2" hitch model. I wonder if a front hitch is made then when towing the rack could be moved to the front.

You are welcome! Hey, I've got a friend who's wife's family lives in Seneca, once in a while we get down there and ride into the mountains, Mountain Rest, Caesar's Head, etc. Some really nice back roads in the Tri-state area.

Bikes in bed

I did pretty much the same as Serotta, used a 4x4 fence post and Yakima cam-lock fork holder. Used carriage bolts. Used the Yakima front wheel holder from my old roof-mount system and bolted that to the 4x4 as well. Works pretty well, BUT I have a bedrug, and where the rear tire rests on the bedrug floor it has formed a depression that won't go away. The pressure of the small contact spot (road bike = very thin tires) and the 20lb bike is enough to cause the depression. I think the bedrug backing flowed out from under the pressure point.

I also strung a cable through the bed tie down and the frame with a lock to discourage the casual thief.
