Screw Towing

Just took out the RV this weekend and was curious as to the performance everyone else was seeing. I'm pulling a 6300 pound travel trailer (fully loaded/about 4K dry). I was running 2600 rpm's @ 65 and 2800 @ 70. All told, I came out with 11.7 mpg for the 600 mile trip. What is everyone else seeing with their towing???

Funny you should ask...

I am just about identical...

Towing my boat and depending on the winds, I will range from 14 to 10. Sometimes I can run with OD on no problem but the slightest headwind or hill and out of OD she goes... When I do tow in OD, I don't use cruise so I can tell by my foot just how much strain is going on rather, how far I am pushing down. Too far and I don't hesitate to take it out of OD and run the 2800 RPM's...

Later,

Chris (ReelWork)

What kind of TT do you have? Likes and dislikes?

I have been shopping since I bought my Screw last month and have been jumping back and forth between which Trailer to buy.

I know your truck, being 4x2 and 3.73's, can pull more than mine...but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone one else pulling a Travel Trailer with their Screw?

Thanks,
Mike

I have a 4500lb or so Hybrid travel trailer that I will be towing shortly with my new SuperCrew.
Wondering how you got a 3.73 rear? I got the 3.55 and I saw no 3.73 rears anywhere on a SuperCrew. Was it an optional package of some type? I did get the tow pkg.
Anyway, our Sport Trac pulled the trailer well for a 6cyl with 4.10LS gears. Should be a cakewalk for the 5.4 SuperCrew.

I'm pulling a 6,000 pound TT 25'. So far pulling with out overdrive and getting about 11 miles per gallon. We will be going from FL to NC in a few weeks so will use OD on that trip, at least to the mountains. The SuperCrew does a wonderful job with 4 people and a loaded trailer. We have the 5.4 and 3.55 gears. I have not towed above 65 MPH I can only imagine what that would do the fuel economy!

i tow a 24ft enclosed race trailer with my Screw 4X4 with 5.4 and 3.55 gears. Total weight is a little over 7300 lbs. Towing with OD off, and the truck does great. I use a weight dist. hitch and dual sway controls. Turns about 2500 rpm @ 65mph and doesn't strain at all. Replaced the factory muffler with a Magnaflow and did the airbox mod, with K&N filter.

The '03 FX4's came with the 3.73 rear. I think the later '02s did as well

I have a 2001 SuperCrew, 5.4L, 3:55, 4x4 and I tow a 26ft / 5700lb TT - I average 10.0 MPG.

At 11.6, I'd say your doing real good!

Tow on . . .

That really sucks! For me that is. Your towing a 6K pound trailer at highway speed with a 4x4 and getting the same gas mileage as I get around town with my 2x4 (5.4L, 3.55 LS, Tow pack) not hauling or towing anything. I'm really starting to wonder if I need to run my truck through service and have it checked. I may have a somewhat heavy right foot, but I can't imagine it's that heavy!

At any rate, I think you're doing great.
