Missing those courtesy lights!
SSCULLY,
I appreciate your response. In doing searches for similar electrical issues I have seen many of your detailed and helpful responses. If anyone can make some sense out of this it would be you.
The reason I did not take off the entire door panel is that I could reach the hole where the light socket should be from the hole for the panel. The door light (in my case the reflector) is actually on the lower back of the armrest. Maybe the wiring could come from below but from what I saw it would seem more logical to route it past the control panel and on to the lights. Based on this I felt it was not necessary to go any further in pulling the entire door panel off.
There is no Black with Blue stripe wire going to the panel. If it did then it would have been relatively easy to splice into it. I guess it is now obvious there are not supposed to be door lights on my S'Crew. Although adding additional wiring myself is probably something I could handle I'm not sure I want to do this. I guess I was hoping the wires were in the door and I could go from there. That does not appear to be the case however.
On the other hand if I do get ambitious enough at least I know where I can wire the door lights from.
Thanks for the help SSCULLY!

I had a spare 10 min to check this afternoon, and it does come from below, at least on a 2001 XLT it does...I don't have 2003 EVTMs to check against,
Need to take off the door skin liner to see the wiring for the lamp.
Here you go, the bulb is right next to where it comes out of the harness at. This is about 6 " below the arm wrest, and it is behind the gray paper liner stuck to the innner door skin.
Sorry you still need to take the door panel off to see if it is there.

Good luck with this, it should only take about 15 min the first time, I am now down to 10 moin remove and replace on the door panel I have been in there that much ( 2 times for the signal mirrors, 1 time for the tweeter, and 1 time for the door key pad mod, and now today. In another 9 months I should be able to get a job at Ford putting door panels on
).
SSCULLY,
I appreciate you going through all that trouble pulling your door panel off (again!). While you were taking the door panel off I was looking behind the passenger side kick panel at the plug you were describing. Looks like I have few less wires than you which would mean my doors are not wired for lights. Here is a pic of the plug:

Pin #6 does not have a wire. In fact from what I understood from your earlier post on the pin outs of this plug I am missing more than just one wire but also one of the 2 wires that are next to it.
I did find a couple black w/ blue stripe wires which went to another connector but not the same pinouts as you had described (see pic, wires are dead center of photo).

There is another group of wires that joins the group from the grey plug before it goes into the door. I cannot tell what colors because they are well taped up. I suppose I should just bite the bullet and take the whole door panel off just to make sure but given what I am finding it doesn't look promising.
Thanks again for all your help.

Yes that should be the one. Mine you this is not a 2003 EVTM, so it might be different then the 2001 EVTM.
The circuits that are missing are :
53 : Coutrsey lamps
19 : Haven't found yet
57 : Haven't found yet
That is just the one side of the connector, the wiring might still be on the other half of the connector.
If you release it from the kick panel, and look at the postion on the other side, you might see the wire.
If so, then 1 of 2 things, either T tap the other side of the wire or got to Napa ( or your autoparts store of choice that has them ) and get the connector pins for that half of the connector, and put them in. The one that is facing the camera in the picture should be the back of the female half of the connector. Need to check that before you but the pins. Also if you are careful, and regular set of crimpers with the point crimp position ( not the half moon / arc type ) you would be able to use to crimp the end on the wire and stick it in there. You need to take apart the connector first, so you can get them to lock together.
This would at least allow you to put some lamps on the running board itself. The only thing I can thing of right now to get light on the running bd, to solve the inital issue you had with this.
Looking at the 1st picture with the connector, it is the lower right open spot should be the ckt #53. This is the one below the Red w/ a light green stripe, or the one on a 45* angle to the Light Green with the Yellow stripe. Check these with a meter to be sure, but that should be the one. These are also on with the GEM module, so they are delay off lamps.
Sorry it has turned out this way for you. If you woudl rather have the lamsp in the door, did you find the hole for the bulb socket in the door behind the reflector ?
I would think that the reflector and the combo reflector/ bulb lense would be the same shape and a direct swap. Junk yard surfing for these ??
Good luck let us know what you come up with.
Steve

SCCULLY,
"did you find the hole for the bulb socket in the door behind the reflector"
I certainly did. Looks like all I would need is a socket and bulb and of course the all important wiring!?!?! I guess that's why I have been pursuing this so hard. If there was wiring it would be a very easy thing to do.

Regarding the opposite side of the connector, it does not have any additional wires connected to it so I would have to find them somewhere else.
My thought at this point is to tap into the black w/ blue stripe wire that is in this area (my 2nd pic of the wiring in the kick panel) and run wires to the doors. It doesn't look all that difficult to get wires from the kick panels to the door lights. On the circuit diagram what color wire connects to the lights in addition to the black w/ blue stripe? And is there a black w/ blue stripe wire on the drivers side somewhere?
BTW, where do you guys get those EVTM's. Sounds like I could certainly use one right about now.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
NExt place to look for the courtesy lamps from the GEM is the interior lamps.
Connector C242 also should have a Black with a light blue stripe as the color code for circuit 53.
This runs to the overhead console, and to cargo lamps, and the rail lamps
Connector C242 is a gray 34 pin connector.
This is over by the central junction box ( fuse box in the cab ).
This would be kind of on top of the back of the fuse box,
It is kind of a pain in the *** to get to, but Rockpick found it for his rear power slider.
It is kind of asquare to rectangle connector. Pin 33 is circuit 53 for the interior lamps. It is going to be a large loom to break into to find it. Cannot tell straight away if it is the one on the drivers side or the pass side of the back of the fuse box. ( the other is C243 which is a black 34 pin connector ( yes same shape, just a different color ).
There are othe rconnectors that have this, but they are in the roof panel on the SCrew.
Looks to be you need to get a mirror back behind the fuse block, and find out which run is from C242, trace it back to a point that you can open it up and look through it, and find the Black with a light blue stripe wire on it. Else you are stuck taking down the roof panel, and tapping it up there. This might be easier, maybe not. Never tried fishing a wire down the A-pillar. If you can get to it this way ( removing the center console, and taking down teh visors on both sides, and running down the A-Pillar ) it might be an easy run through the boot to the door ( how is that for BS ).
I got my EVTM from Helminc.com but others have gotten the CDROM one from eBay for a lot less. I got the CDROM complete shop manual, and the paper copy of the EVTM ( which is included in the CDROM ) both from Helminc.com
Might want to get one for your year to confirm these things as well, as I am workng from a 2001 EVTM, not a 2003 EVTM.
Good Luck
Steve

Thanks Steve.
I'm going to have to get myself my own EVTM. It sounds like there are many potential options that I need to explore. My goal will be to do it as simply as possible and not destroy anything in the process.
Thanks again for all your help.

Mark,
Does your year has the rear courtesy lamps ? The ones that come on with the interior lamps, and have a switch for individual use almost above the rear pillar.
Rather then trying to find the circuit #53 in a lom with 34 wires in it, this might be a quick one.
You might find that circuit in the rear pillar on the passenger side, so you wouldn't have to take the headliner down back there.
The rear cargo lamps and the high mount brake light run up the pass side rear pillar.
Should only be 4 or 5 wires going up that way ( brake, lamp, and ground and the rear power outlet wiring and maybe ground on that as well ). You may or may not find the power rear slider harness in there as well. Got me on that one.
Same color code as the others with what the EVTM shows.
That harness mates up with a few others, so going any more forward might have you run into another circuit with the same color code, if you can trace it to the front you might find it in the pass kick panel by the PCM.
Take a quick look behind the pass side rear pillar cover for a small harness. Peel back the loom tape and see if it is right there.
There should be room for putting in a T-tap in the area behind the power outlet and then 1 wire to the front, get a ground at the front, put in a splice to run to the drivers side under the dash, and out to the pass side. Bulb socket and done.
Sounds easy, so something has to be wrong with it.
Give a look, it might work out better this way, with just a little additional plastic removal.

I find it interesting how Ford decides which trucks get this or that. From pinstripes to courtesy lights, it seems to be hit or miss.
My 01 Lariat has the courtesy lamps, as does my bone stock 03 XLT.
Things that make you go hmm.

Steve,
You might be on to something here. I do have the rear courtesy lights with the switch. And upon closer inspection behind the passenger side kick panel I think I have found 2 black w/ blue stripe wires. They appear to go up the front pillar. Could it be that is how they get to the rear lights? I guess it really doesn't matter as long as I found the proper color wire. I don't know what else they would be for.
Well this is promising news. I'll have to do some further investigation this weekend.
Speaking of rear courtesy lights I'm surprised they are still there. I would think this would have been the first thing to go. My kids would have been bummed though. That's the first thing they looked for when test driving the new S'Crews.
You're always coming up with another angle Steve. I really appreciate the effort. Enjoy the holiday weekend.

Mark,
Did you ever look any further into this ?
The holiday weekend and all, I figured you got side tracked with the family.
Let me know if you are moving forward, and need anything else.

Steve,
Haven't had a chance to start digging out wires. I did have the truck in for a door rattle and asked them to look for wiring in the doors. As we had suspected up to this point there are no wires in the doors for lights. They didn't think it was any big deal to add since the hole was there for the socket. Just need to add the wiring.
I think my best place to get power is from the 2 black w/ light blue stripe wires that are located in the right passenger kick panel.
This project has become lower in priority since I got the original style running boards on the truck. The ones they had on it were more a tube style and it was easy to miss them if you weren't careful getting out of the truck. It was really a challenge in the dark.
It still bums me out everytime I see a S'Crew with these lights. I'm going to have to check on what Ford will charge for the sockets, bulbs and cover. Once I have the parts it will kick start me to get this done.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
I took a look throught the EVTM this am, and here is what I found for connectors and color codes behind the right kick panel by the fuel inertia switch.: The one that we are looking for is Circuit 53, black with a light blue stripe.
C203 : black 16 pin connector ( similar in shape to the Gray C206 connector, but the ribs on the edge are in different places )
This seems to have circuit #53 in it as well ! YES !!!!
Looking at the Female side of the plug ( looking into the connector ) the upper left hand corner, pin #4 should have a Black w/ a light blue stripe on it.
If you use your picture below of the connectors, this seems to be the black connector to the right of the grey one on the outside. Looking at the mounting, they are mounted sideways from the connector picture in the book, so then you look at the picture below, the circuit #53 should be the one in the upper left hand corner. The side of the connector facing the camera in the picture seems to be the back of the female connector, so if you are looking at the EVTM page 150-9, this is using the male pinout diagram, and rotate it 90* to match the tab orientation.
Looks like we have a winner ! Leave it to Ford to have the same circuit in 2 connectors ( poss 3 ).
Take a T-Tap on that, and check it with a test light, or meter to be sure, but it seems you have hit pay dirt on the cicuit #53.
Good luck with the test, let me know if that is it or not, I have the list of the all the conectors back there, if this does not work.

Steve,
That's great news. I thought I noticed the correct wire over in this area. I will have to check it out this weekend. I'm out of town all week so I won't be able to do anything until then.
Thanks,
Mark

Reviving this tread.
Anyone know how this turned out?
It really chaps my but that Ford took the courtesy lights out but left the "it looks like you are supposed to have courtesy lights lenses" in.
My 2003 does not have them but has the lenses.
