Missing those courtesy lights!
Missing those courtesy lights!
I'm wondering if anyone else with a newer SuperCrew is missing their courtesy lights in the front doors. This is my 2nd S'Crew and you know the saying "you don't know what you've got until it's gone"? Well it is certainly true for the courtesy lights. I never realized how much they helped at lighting up the ground when you were about to step out of the cab at night. 3 separate times over the past 3 weeks I've had to grope with my feet to find the running board and then the ground as I exited the truck.
Has anybody ever looked in to hooking these lights back up? There is still a hole for the socket in the panel behind the red cover. Has anyone looked behind the panel to see if the wires are still there?

A while back, somebody posted in one of the forums that he installed his own courtesy lights under the truck. He found some waterproof housings and mounted them under the truck to illuminate the ground. Might be a possible solution for you.
Dennis,
I found a whole bunch of stuff in the electrical forums on this subject. There is hope if I wanted to add lights to my running boards or underneath the truck.
gschein,
The dealer did say this feature was discontinued along with the speed sensitive volume control (actually the control is still in the stereo but it isn't connected to the truck so it doesn't do anything). Also, my covers are all red not half clear and half red which further points to the fact they had no intention of wiring up lights on mine.
EkimLesondak,
The fact that your 2003 Lariat SCrew has courtesy lights is promising. I would think that any SCrew would have the wiring still in the door which would mean it would not take much to find the wires, connect them to a socket, install a bulb and I'm back in business. When was your Lariat manufactured? My XLT was completed on March 5th. I have another question for you - Does your stereo have speed sensitive volume that works?

I'm not sure on the build date of my truck. I bought it in April...so it was build before then!
Does the courtesy lights just come on the Lariats? That really doesnt make much since. But I would imagine the wiring would be there. Let us know what you find.
As for the radio, I do have the speed sensitive volume option on my radio...but it does not seem to work. I can set it, but makes no difference in volume. I really wish that feature worked!

I have a 2001 XLT GEN I (built before 07/2000). I have the courteousy lights in my door (half red / half clear lens). I also have the speed sensing volume control (seven levels and it works). I have a friend who just took delivery on a 2003, I'll ask him what he has next week (when he returns from travel).

My 2003 XLT (non lariat) Screw only has red reflectors in the door, no lights....the 2002's had em. I wonder if the wires are still there also. When I get my speakers in and tear off the door panels I will see if the wires are in there. If they are I am going to get some bulbs some light things up. Is there a place where you can buy after market lenses to replace the solid red lenses they put in the doors? These would be nice for lighting up the ground in the woods. I almost always drop something on the ground changing into my hunting clothes and end up using a flashlight to search.
Also my speed sensitive volume control does not function

I popped up the door control panel (where the window and lock buttons are) to see what wires were in there. It looks to me like any door light wiring would also come past this panel but I found no such wires. All the wiring goes to the 2 plugs that are for the door lock and window controls. Now I'm wondering where the wires for the lights connect on S'Crews with door lights. If anyone gets a chance to pop up the panel and take a look I would appreciate it. It's really easy to do. Using your fingers gently pull up on the front edge. It will pop up at the front and then you can pull it out and look inside the door. I noticed some unused lugs on the plugs so wondering if that is where the connection is made to the lights.
Thanks.
Thanks.
I've added some picks of the panel on the passenger side door. (Click here to view.).
I'm curious what it looks like inside here on a S'Crew with door lights.

The door panel looks the same on the mine. The lights in the back are lower in the door panel from what I recall ( having them off to do the keypad mod ). So if you want to see if the wiring is there, you need to take the door panel off.
You should be looking for a Black with a light blue stripe wire ( interior lamp circuit ) on the front doors paired with a black wire ( grnd ). Same for both sides.
The connector in the door is C602, this seems to be the bulb socket itself, so there appears to be no additional connecotrs from the one in the pass side kick panel. The only other indicator is the splice for the drivers and pass side in the circuit.
The wiring for this believe it or not, starts over by the pass side kick panel where the PCM and fuel inerita switch are at.
The connector number is C206. gray plug body color.
It is a square 16 pin connector that has 12 wires in it ( or it might only have 10 or 11 if this circuit is not installed. ).
The black w/ a light blue stripe is circuit #53, which if you look at a 16 pin square connector ( 4 rows x 4 coulmns ) the connector is divided into a coulmn of 4 plastic seperator 2 columns of 4, a plastic seperator, and a single column of 4.
Circuit 53 is pin #6 in the connector, which is the second row of the inside set of 2 coulmns. It is next to a Red with a light green stripe wire, and just below a light blue with a red stripe wire.
So if the wires are not in the loom in the door, then the only other place to get them is over where you get the circuit for the running bd lamps.
Sorry it is not much, all I got right now, without being able to take the door panel off.
