Check Engine Light

I'm not really mechanical in any way and need some help so I don't look like a complete *** when I'm at the dealer tomorrow.

Here's my story.

I'm driving an 01' Screw, 4x4 with the 5.4 and the odometer just turned 32k. Over the last few months I'd go to start the truck, the engine would turnover but not start until I popped the gas a bit. This would happen a couple times in a row and then not occur again for a couple months. I was concerned about it but since I've also been recovering from back surgery during this time - getting to the dealer for this problem wasn't a priority.

Anyhow Today, I notice that the truck is idling a little rough - no check engine light yet. I head down the highway and when getting up to speed the truck is bucking very rapidly for a couple hundred yards. When I do get up to speed the truck is fine at around 55 - cruising without a problem, but when I go to accelerate again - more bucking.

I park, bring my wife for her doctor's appointment and when I leave the doctor's I notice the "SERVICE ENGING SOON" light is on. I get the truck home. All gauges read normal and when I pop the hood i cannot notice any odd sounds but can feel the engine sort of missing.

More history - I live in NJ, use regular gas and don't tow or drive the vehicle off-road.

My last oil change was 1200 miles ago. I also changed the air filter at that time.

Can one of you truck guys help? Regards,

sounds like a stuck ICV (idle control valve) did you have to keep the idle up to keep it from dying when it was warming up?...got a parts store that will pull the code for you like auto zone? then post back the results ...you'll have a reasonibly good stastment to make to the service adviser at the stealership after a few of the members reply back

No

The truck didn't stall while it was warming up - though it did feel like it was going too. After the run home from the doc's office, I left the engine running while I looked under the hood - the truck didn't stall at this time either.

Cool

AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT. THOSE WARNING LIGHTS ARE PUT THERE FOR STEALERSHIP TO RIP YOUR A-- OFF. DON'T DO A THING TILL IT WON'T START THEN HAVE IT TOWED TO A SHADE TREE MECHANIC. THOSE THINGS ARE A PAIN IN THE A-- AND DON'T MEAN S--T.

Could be as simple as a bad plug or wire. Did it seem to be missing on only one cylinder?

Sounds like a plugged fuel filter or a bad EGR sensor!!

Code P0307

I didn't really have the time to fart around on this so I called a Ford dealer about 15 miles from the house and drove it in.

Testing returned code P0307. Something about cylinder #7 coil. Had about a 35 minute wait and left with my truck running like it did the first day I drove it off the lot. Everything was under warranty and a pretty cofortable waiting room to boot.

Just curious - was this problem why the truck wouldn't start until I tapped the gas pedal a bit?

Thanks,

Maybe a small cat got sucked into your engine. Happens to me all the time.

Honestly I have a 2001 SCREW and my check engine light came on. It was a sensor that was on their recall list. Took them a couple of hours to pop it out and a new one in. with 32k miles take it to the dealer.

The beginning was a joke all of you PETA people.
