Frozen Gas Pedal
Frozen Gas Pedal
Has anyone else had this happen. When the temp drop below 10deg my gas pedal will be frozen. When you press it it doesn't move then all the sudden it comes free. Could be pretty Dangerous in the wrong situation. However it generally doesn't happen after the first 15 minutes of driving. And Yes this is after warming the truck up for 15-20 minutes.
It has happened to me once when the temp was 9 degrees while pulling out of the driveway right after starting. I had to stomp it really hard to get it unstuck. I had the dealer check while under warranty but they found no problem. The metal probably shrinks slightly in severe cold causing the throttle plate to stick. I have wiped mine with a thin coat of teflon type oil (Liquid Wrench) a few times since then and had no reoccurence. Do a search, other people have also experienced this problem. My Supercrew is a 2001 model.

Depending on the year, there is a TSB that souds similar to this.
Covered years :
1997-1998 EXPY, F-150, F-250 LD
2000-2002 EXPY, F-150
Article number : 01-21-5
Issue :
In rare instances throttle sticking may occur on a few vechicles in very cold ambient temperatures after operating at steady speed or extended idle for a period of time. This may be due to ice-build-up from ooisture int eh PCV gas on the throttle plate or throttle body.
Action :
Verify that the condition is not caused by throttle body sludging, throttle cable binding or interference between an improperly positioned floor mat and accelerator pedal.
If no other conditions are identified, check for evidence of PCV system backflow.
Service procedure:
Inspect the inside of the clean air tube at the PCV closure hose connection for presence of moisture, oil or oily stains. If evidence of PCV system backflow is found, replace the PCV system with the revised PCV service kit YL3Z-6A603-AA. Instructions are included in the service kit for service procedure.
Warranty status :
Eligible under the provisions of the bumper to bumper warranty coverage and emissions warrenty coverage.
This is typed from the paper copy of the TSB North American Region Number : 01-21, dated 29-OCT-01. I tried to do the best I could, but if you have questions on it, you can get a paper copy of it from helminc.com for $ 6.00 or maybe your service department might give you a copy ( never tried that one ).
Just note the years, and the other poss. problems.
Good luck, post back with the outcome to this, for the next guy.

My truck is a 2001 and it froze many times in the first year I had it. Others had reported the same problem. There was a TSB from Ford and I brought mine back under warranty and had the throttle body replaced under the direction of the TSB. At the time there must have been high demand on these as the throttle body was on backorder for a long time and therefore the replacement was done done till March and winter was almost over and did not get cold enough to freeze again. Last winter was mild and it only did it once and I didn't have time to bring the truck in. This winter being very cold it has done it a number of times but my lease is up before next winter and I couldn't be brothered to pursue it.
It only freezes at idle position first thing on a cold morning so it has not been a safety issue but scary thinking that it may decide to freeze at something more than idle.

My 01 does the freezing thing, had it in twice while under warantee, they just oiled it??? Never fixed, so far only does it overnight, just have to break it loose in the morning........dealer never never saw it before
