Do a search on "sparkplug blowout problem". Evidently there is quite a problem with one or more of the plugs blowing out of their threadings and causing costly engine repairs. I haven't followed the threads closely sorry.

If you look closely at your 5.4, you'll notice it doesn't have spark plugs. That's right! There's a coil over each cylinder, and that is a "low energy" trigger wire coming from the ignition system.

Since when did the 5.4 go plugless? Sure it has coil for each cylinder... but there's a sparkplug under it....

yup, 5.4's have spark plugs. just no spark plug wires. i'm sure if you look on the L board within the 1st few pages you'll probably see a thread on a "blown plug" or "launched plug" or something like that

Look under the Engine board:

living with ford spark plug blow out problem

If you tend to worry about things, take my advice and don't read it!

The summary (without getting into all the anxiety) is:
when the plugs are changed, make sure they are carefully and properly torque. Remember that the heads are aluminum while the plugs are steel. Speicfically, it is easier to destroy the threads on an aluminum head than an iron one.

If you like, you can check your plugs and make sure they are properly torque.

If you are unluckly enough to head a blown plug, read the thread above and consider your options. Ford says you have to replace the head. It may be worthwhile to consider a steel insert instead.

Question Hmmm

What is puzzling to me about this whole spark plug launch talk is, what is the other side to all the stories when they do throw a plug? Did it happen when doing normal driving? Did it happen when trying to race another vehicle or on the track? Hmmm.

I don't understand this concern, being when you have a powerful motor as the L motor, but when people mod the hell out of them, with a L "Stock" internal components, the question here is, how long do think this motor will last? If you run it into the ground like I'm sure most people do, as would I, it's gonna mess up, and probably throw a rod or as in this case throw a plug. Lots of horsepower equals to a lot of compression.

Just my opinion though. But if I had the know how and the L to mod, I think before I go adding a bunch of aftermarket stuff, I believe I would go over the basics and find out first hand what I have, and what I can do with it, and if need be, change internal parts before adding external mods to get the horsepower desired. Simple common sense. C'mon we all know, even though it's a Lightning motor and it has all the power we can handle, it's still a STOCK MOTOR. And I don't mean a stock 5.4 with a supercharger, I mean it's still built at Ford thru Ford design. And as much as I've been working with Ford for the last 3 years, I know good and well, they don't alway go with the best parts. See what I'm saying? It's like a Chevy 350. Everybody knows they have to tear it down and build it back up to get what they want. Same scenario here.

Not trying to flame anyone here, I just don't understand the reasoning behind complaining about Ford products. I'm sure this sort of thing would happen to anyone who runs the hell out of an engine or throws 5000 bucks worth of external mods on it.

And the same thing goes with the 4 thread, no thread stuff I've seen on here. Don't anyone think that Ford tested these motors for durability, with a non modded STOCK ENGINE? I think Ford more than likely did.

But that's my opinion. You get out of it how you treat it. Sorry for the rant.

Noah'sDad. the 5.4 sure does have spark plugs! I think someone has been pulli'n the wool over your eyes.

tfleming & jaymz............. I have no Idea what your are referring to. My question is a serious one. I hoped to get some information on from the great people on this board.....nothing else.

fox32601 My truck does not have a chip or anything to make it more likely to have problems. Engine is stock.
This plug blowout problem has happpend in normal driving.

mlaugh, humor, information is related to

Simply a Yoda way of communication......
tfleming & jaymz are only relating to the humoristic, yoda phrased opening question. I really don't think they are trying to escape the seriousness of the blow plug situation, they are just doing what this board does so well. Allow freedom of thought while spreading valuable information between thousands of like minded people.
They weren't poking fun at you, only the play on words.

Yoda is the little dwarf, Munchkin dude from the Star Wars flicks, and a stilted way of sentence construction, he has.

Ya gotta understand that anyone who posts here is fair game for anyone else, especially us wise-asses who like to have a little fun and have a strange sense of humor.

Raoul, are you listening?

Compared to Gigi, you're being treated like a prince!

Ya just gotta understand that you can't be TOO serious around here.

Calm down

I didnt mean to offend, just a little joke. Those are allowed right?

Thanks for bringing this subject to my attention. I have read every thread and will now be on the lookout for this problem should it occur.
