RockPick,

I'm not sure where I saw the link to it, but some guys did it on their escape bed extender. The black pieces that have the bumpers on them and that keep the tubes spaced apart . They bought 2 more of them and put them right next to where the hinge bolts go in. So you would have four pieces with the bumpers down and 2 pieces with the bumpers up (in the closed position). The back end of the extender against the tailgate can't be pushed down. I did a rough diagram as to how it would look, the red pieces are the 2 added ones.

I hope this helps. I wish i could find the link to it, it really looks good, and totally stock. I plan on doing the same mod when i stop being lazy

Sorry about the long delay. Been on vacation...

I'm sorry about the controversy. My bed extender has rubber feet directly under the pivot points, so you can't push it down to release it.

I made the mistake of assuming that all of them were the same as mine.

Good thread here, great reading. Looks like if you pick up a bed extender on ebay you most likely will have to install the mod to keep it secure.

I'm a big ebay fan, and I noticed the same people selling bed extenders one after another. I wondered if they worked for the company that manufactured them or what. So poked around and looked at some of their past sales.

One guy said he took it off his truck, then took one off his Sports Track and sold it. Then he had a pice from off his sports car. Later he had a second extender from off his (other) Sports Track. Hmmm must be some line-up of vehicles in that driveway.

I got my extender off of ebay. When I saw it, I thougt it was my lucky day. When I got outbid I was sad until I saw, oh another one. Now I find out that mine is probably stolen and I best check to see if I need that mod.

I went to that site listed above. Great site. I'll have to take a closer look at my moon roof too.

Sounds like the above mentioned e-bay seller is umm getting his bed extenders in a not so rightous way.

I won't say he/she is stealing them but if they are, hopefully they get caught and e-bay conviently is keeping track of the money there making on the extenders.

The quickest way to get caught is by doing it again and again and again and again.....

So where do you buy these extra bumpers? And how do you put them on, do you have to take the extender apart????

You all read/saw that story about the guy (can't remember if it was here or FTW) that caught someone trying to steal his... upon closer investigation, the vehicle that those people were driving were FULL of extenders that were, obviously, stolen.

I don't think extender theft is nearly as prevalent but, I'm sure it's still happening...

Guard those puppies! They're nearly $400 from the stealership!

dcovell,

Ford has a part number for the pieces, though i'm not sure what it is. I'm pretty sure you don't have to take the extender apart, since i remember the guy writing that it was an easy mod to do.

Maybe you can get them from the stealership but, they're not listed as a service part on the service schematic.

Hey Guys,

I FOUND IT ! I FOUND IT! WOO HOO!

The link to the mod the guy did on his Sport Trac. I'm ASSuming that these will work on our extenders too. He said that the part number is #1L5Z-99286B23-BA and cost $14.70 each. RockPick, the guy mentions that they have no bumper on the bottom like the originals, so that might be why they aren't listed on the schematic.

Here's the link.....

Boy it would have been much easy to have gotten off my a$$ and found the link in the first place. It was back on 5.21.02 on this site.

Hope this helps, to me this is the cleanest way to do it.

Matt

Has anyone done this in a supercrew? Are the bed extenders the same?

Yes, I've seen that post over there too, since I also have a Sport Trac. This will work with the Supercrew's bed extender. Those pieces are the same, but the bed extenders are not. You should be safe ordering those same part numbers.
