160 Thermostat w/Whipple

I am compiling the list of things I need to get when I install the Whipple. One item is I want to replace the thermostat. As I understand it the kit ships with a 160 degree thermostat. Should I go with that? I have always read that low temp thermostats are a bad idea... Thanks for any input.

I am running a 170. Some go as high as 180. 160 is to cold. Poor heat in winter and these motors just don't perform well at that temp. I ask Whipple about this a few years ago and was told the decision to use a 160 was made to help prevent detonation. These kits go out all over the country with varying fuel qualities and people use their trucks for varies things and this was a measure to try to prevent detonation under worst case scenarios like towing with crappy fuel.

The 170 has work very well for me. Excellent performance. Head temps run in the 180's and peak around 204 after a 1/4 mile blast. I have the 15/16ths of inch radiator.

I'm running the 180 against whipples recommendation. My CHT are around 190 to 194, and up to 198 when boosting.. I've seen 200 on a 100 degree day.. Heat in the cab is still great...

JDM also suggested to disregard whipple's 160 recommendation when I was building up my kit for their tune..

Best way to answer that is to track your temps (ECT) with the programmer. See where it's at while cruising around then go do a nice 0-80 run or more if you can and see where your temps are. If you're exceeding 210 I would recommend a slightly cooler stat then stock.

The purpose of the cooler stat is to prevent detonation and keep combustion chamber temps down. A secondary benefit to this is the computer may add more timing which means more power. A third benefit is a cooler engine means a cooler blower and cooler charge temps. Again more power.

For sure. Like Jason said. Unless someone logs data between the two then no real info can be provided.

If the stocker works then leave it. If you're running a little warm, change it.

Am happy with the stocker but I don't race and the climate here can get a little chilli.
