Pyrometer & throttle body installed (pics & feedback)
Pyrometer & throttle body installed (pics & feedback)
So Saturday night I had a few minutes to kill so I went ahead and installed my AutoMeter Pyrometer Ultra-Lite Series and an 80mm TB from BBK. First I installed the TB. Install was straight forward however I did have to nose a little off of one corner to clear the fuel rail. No big deal. I was pleased with everything about it. At first these were made with metal gears which was a no-no due to binding issues as they aged. Now they are made identical to the Ford part with nylon gears. The opening measured 80mm as it should. The Whipple opening is 75.7mm. I recall someone talking about boring the opening which would make sense. However the rod through the tb measures 7.7mm. So the two parts basically have the same flow area. I wouldn't remove the Whipple just to bore it. It wouldn't be worth it. But I might do it when I relocate the temp sensor. I was also pleased to find my tb and intake tube free of oil!!
The catch can I installed 5000+ miles ago is doing it's job. Damn I forgot to empty it last night...
Anyway the Pyrometer was an easy install and I was pleased to see exhaust temps only reach 1340F after a 0-100 run. This means she can be leaned out quite a bit on the drag tune which is what I have been hoping for. She may see a 12.6-7 on my 9.5psi setup after all. With that being said I am delaying my install of the Metco crank pulley until I can run her again with a leaner drag tune. I want to squeeze her for all I can and then up the boost.
Clean intake tube and tb

Stock TB

A part that is what it says it is!!

Lots of breathing room lost here

All lit up

No dyno yet. I've done a lot sine my last pull. I will probably do another when I up the boost. Gonna head to Va and do some racing and stop by Troyers. Per Troyer the tb's are only worth about 7-10hp on our FI motors. I'm chasing all the ponies I can from everything but boost right now. Then I'm taking her to 11psi.

sounds good. cant wait to see videos and/or dyno numbers
I only said you should port the whipple inlet to match the 80MM because sometimes it can cause a loud whistle sound. Its like a certain RPM with certain throttle position. I only plan to port this the same time I port the lower intake and relocate the IAT sensor.
What temps are you looking for with your pyrometer? Mike told me a few times what temps the exhaust valves destruct at but I dont remember what it was.

I had heard that 1450f was the oh chit temp, time to back off. Is your probe mounted on the primary of # 5, or?

I've been wanting one of those 80mm throttle bodies...
I'm assuming no tune was needed?
Is the weather cooler there in NC? I don't even both driving my truck during the summer with the 105+ degree temps.

As far as I know Onelowf its around 1550F. A max of 1600F for a brief second but honestly I don't want to get anywhere in that range. The tune is set to dump a crap load of fuel when EGT's rach 1600F or 1700F (sorry I don't remember which) to cool things down. But it doesn't happen instantly. There are timers for how long that temp has to be experinced before fuel is dumped.
FatherFord get a TB. I'm loving this one so far. It is much smoother than stock and no tune is needed. I won't be racing anytime soon as our temps are still between 97-102. I drive my truck on the weekends and sometimes on an evening to go out for dinner. Thats about it and I'm taking it easy in this heat.

Yea throttle response is much better with the throttle body and as twin said, smoother. A/F doesnt get affected according to my wideband. I think it was a little leaner for a mile or two then the computer figured it out.
yeah
i've had that throttle body on my truck for over a year!
loved it
hatted the whistle it made untill i ported the intake
haven't installed it on the whipple yet!
in fact it dosen't fit.. casting interferance!
got a pic of the bottom of yours?
also u should need a tune! (at least thats what whipple says)

You just have to grind a little off the corner. No big deal. Whipple will tell you to get a retune for any and everything. You have to understand they have to say what's absolutely safe. They don't know the truck nor your tune. For what its worth Mike is the one who sold me the tb and the pulley and he has no issue with adding them to the current tune. All he ask me to do was run the truck a few times with a tune he came up with a few weeks ago and report back the results before I add the boost. The tune we are hoping is worth 3/10 in the quarter.
nope mine dosen't fit at all
casting by the motor (Gears) wasn't machined
and the bolt holes miss by almost 1/8..
talked to bbk and i can machine this off
going to get it on soon
think i may have found a part of my troubles
the IWE sytem ..vacumm hose

Yeah that's how mine was. Missed the holes by about an 1/8th. I tried to get a pic for ya but it didn't work. If you refer to the pic up top start at just to the right of the s in plus and grind a nice curve there. I also should mention I gently bent the inlet tube to the fuel rail. Just barley moved it. Maybe an 1/8 over toward the driverside fender.
I should also mention my af's are dead on what they were before the tb install. I am amazed at how much smoother the throttle response is with this tb installed. Very very pleased with this thing thus far.

Mounted in the collector of bank one for now. I may relocate it to a single primary and as close to the head as possible later on. I'm figuring on 8% cooling taking place from the ead to the collector. Highest reading so far is 1340 plus 8%=1447F. This is in street form. Dropping 300lbs of dead weight and rolling resistance combined will drop this temp a little further. When I have some hard data I hope to begin leaning out the tune just a little.
