Engine Surges at WOT

My engine now surges almost like its not getting enough fuel only when I drive WOT. The Check engine light flashes during this time but then goes of once I let off the gas. I know the dealer sent my computer to roushe to be re-tuned and put in new fuel injectors for the roush as well.I have a fresh tank of 93 Ultra in there. is the computer still adjusting?

I'd hook up a scan gauge and pull the codes, they should be stored since the CEL is flashing. My guess it that your A/F ratio is getting all wonky at WOT.

The flashing CEL is telling you that you have Misfire@WOT. Several things could cause this. Bad plugs (I know you just replaced them), Lean AFR or too little spark at WOT (could be caused by an aggressive intake air temp retard calibration). Scan guage will tell you what the code is (it will be misfire) but you will need to install an AFR meter to see what your AFR is.

inurok, something sounds funny to me. I almost wonder if you have the wrong plugs installed. In your earlier post you stated a misfire at higher RPMs and the dealer said the wrong plugs came with the kit. They then installed OEM plugs? I would call Roush and verify you have the right plugs installed. I know when I installed my intercooled kit the plugs were correct. Also, there was an inspection list for every piece in my kit that was signed off. I will find out what the plug number is on mine and let you know. "Knock on wood" I have not had any issues like you are describing.

In addition to the correct plugs, make sure they are gapped correctly.

Yeah the problem is the ROUSH dealer is like an hour away and I always need a ride back so its a tough trip for me each way. Once I can get a ride back I will bring it in. I sure wish I could just bring it to any Ford Dealer other than just a Roush ford dealer.

inurok, the plugs that came in my kit are Autolite Revolution HT, "HT0". They are a colder plug to help reduce combustion chamber temperatures. I hope you get the problem resolved.

Thanks all. I am wondering should I call Roush about all these problems or would that just **** the dealer off. I just want everything to work and thats why I went with the Roush. had I know there would be so many little anoying problems I would have just had a speedshop install the Whipple and lost my warranty.

Check engine light is on and the computer reads random missfire. They changed the plug once I was told so now what?

Sorry I am just a little frustrated and since I know noting much about engines my hands are tied so to speak.

I would call Roush and see what they say. Your dealer probably won't care since it gets you out of thier hair. Not sure why your truck is eating plugs but it sure sounds like a plug issue. I would just swap in some new HT0's and go from there. Maybe buy the plug gapping tool from Vortech and tighten the gap~5 thou while you are at it just for a little extra safety margin.

Roush does not seem all that helpful other than saying to bring it back to the original dealer that did the install. They also said it is recomended that I only bring the truck to the dealer that installed the Roush for any and all services to the truck. Kinda sucks since the dealer that installed it is over 1 hour away and the next closest regular ford dealer is like 15 minutes away.

Roush does not tell you this before the install. I was under the impression that you could take it to any ford dealer and it would be covered for 3year 36,000 miles thru roush.

Problem I had with surging seems to only happen when the engine is cold and goes away when the engine is at normal operating temperature?

At this point I am thinking I shoulda got a whipple charger.

inurok, call Roush, there is an issue with the check valve in the Blower bypass circuit. It may have some impact on your surging problems.

I am not 100% sure, but I believe it is only with the intercooled kits. I am sure someone at Roush can verify which units.
