Lightning Supercharger

Hey Guys I'm new to the forum. Recently bought an 01 KR F150 4x4 5.4. And I'm ready to start adding horses. I've read through almost every thread on here and there seem to be a ton of guys with a ton of knowledge. I found a svt take off supercharger on e bay I was thinking about buying. Give me some input- I'm trying to keep it around $2K.
This is just the beginning of the questions to come.
Thanks in advance.
Guy

to do a L swap it will run you more then 2K...but the power you get is well worth it...I have done it along with many others and its a great mod to do

here is a link to Mad's site with all the parts needed to do the swap and Mad can answer any of your ?'s with the swap

About a year ago here is what I spent to do the L upgrade:

$1200 for the blower, manifold, coils
$1600 from mad enterprise - GREAT HELP!!
$400 for an intercooler from JLP
$400 for a XCal2 and custom program - I would suggest you avoid Sal if you want a timely retune for an overlean condition (13 weeks and still waiting) But we're busy - Yea Right
$200 for miscelaneous parts, coolant, belts, boost gauge, etc

4x4 supercrew - 1st dyno pull 335 RWHP - 425 RWTQ

GDGemmer,

Don't buy that setup you're looking at, it is for a Mustang and won't fit the 5.4L.

If you keep looking on E-bay you should see a Lightning or Harley take-off come up for a little less than that, that is what you will need.

As for doing the swap for $2000, I'm afraid you are looking at substantially more than that but it is still the best bang for the buck.

I have been thinking about doing a L swap on my 03 5.4 supercab fx4. I have found a few on ebay. The assembly comes complete with intake, 10 row intercooler, fuel rails, injectors, throttle body, coil packs, wiring harness and all sensors. I knew I would a custom tune, 90mm mass air sensor, and a new air intake. I'm guessing I would still need everything that is listed on the madenterprise site. If I were to do a L swap I would be looking a over $3000 That is more than I was wanting to spend.

I was told for about $3200 I could get a Kenne Bell supercharger for my truck which is better than the Eaton and can make more power even though the Kenne Bell is not intercooled.

There is the reason right there. While the KB setup is nice, I don't think it is only $3200 and it is no where as nice as the L swap. I just finished putting together a swap for a friend. I shopped for months, picked up most of what I needed used and spent just over 3K. It helped that I had done the swap before so i knew what I needed etc. but expect to spend 3500 or so on the swap.

You can sometimes get a wrecked/used L drivetrain on ebay from time to time for about that price or just pick up the blower/manifolds etc from Monkeybiscuit (sp) for about $1400 and give Mike a call.

IMO best option for the 5.4.. But if i had a mach 1 I'd be all over those cobra setups.

It will not make more power than a Lightning swap. With the out of box KB kit, additional mods are necessary to equal the L swap at 8psi. For the 2V 5.4the L swap is a great hp/tq per dollar setup.

Any idea how much power your putting to your rear wheels? Also have you guys had to do anything to your tranny to handle the extra hp? How much horsepower can my stock 5.4 handle safely? If I put $3500 into a supercharger I will keep my truck for long time so I want my engine and tranny to last.

I'm running around 500 RWHP At 15PSI on a built block.Race built tranny.
I wouldnt go much over the stock boost level of 9PSI on your stock block. You may need to have trany work down the road.
If you want your motor and trany to last a long time then save your money and dont put a blower on it.Blower will shorten the life of both.

Your welcome.
Don't get me wrong, the blower is by far the best mod I have but it cost me big.I have been through 2 motors,3 blowers and 2 tranys.I think I got it righ this time.lol With a 100 shot of NOS I should be in the high 11s.

Ok here are a couple more quick questions. Do I have to do anything about compression, or can I keep all my stock internals and still run 8 or 9 lbs of boost? Forced induction is totally new to me I've rebuilt motors done some of my own head work, valve jobs, etc... so I'm not mechanically uninclined but it seems like I might be in over my head on this one. Without previous knowledge am I wizzin in the wind?

if your going to keep your boost in the 8-9lb range you dont need to change your stock internals...you can run the stock compression and enjoy the extra power

Im running 12psi on my L swap with stock block

That seems crazy to me. How long have you been running that much boost on a stocky? Better yet. How many miles do you have on your truck?
