Supercharging a higher mileage engine.
Supercharging a higher mileage engine.
I was wondering, and maybe this is one of those posts that is beaten to death but would 100 000 miles still be OK to supercharge? My truck has 166 000 km's on it, so a little over 100 000 miles. Just kinda wondering how it would react, has anyone done similar? Should I just rebuild when the supercharger is an idea? Just curious to see if anyones done this to theirs? I was looking into a procharger or vortech.

SCotty
My truck has a smidge over 94000 miles and it runs great with the P1-SC and 9# boost pulley, 3-core intercooler, 42# inj., 90 mm maf. That many miles or kms on these engines is nothing if it has been taken care of properly. I'm currently running 280 rwhp and 340 rwtq. I'm still working on the tune so those #'s will go up. I'd say get some ***** and get blown. Good luck.

I supercharged my 5.4 right at 91000 miles. at 95000 I added the 42# injectors and 90mm MAF + an intercooler. All in all, before mikes tuning I was rollin on 225 rwhp (with a whole lotta tune issues) but now thats resolved and I am hoping that in a couple weeks, I'll be next in the 300rwhp club.

Exactly. If the oil was changed regularly and everything taken care of, the inside of that engine at 100K will probably look like new. I have 8psi of intercooled boost on my 130,000 mile 4 cylinder and it runs like a champ. Burns no oil and hardly any blowby. I'd say there should be no problems doing that.
I'm at 90,000 miles on my 01 supercrew with 5.4 and I just put on a powerdyne blower, 42# injectors, and 90mm Maf, along with troyer tune. Still working on the tune, as its running way too rich (check engine light on) but, with the base tune at 5-6lbs of boost I made 256rwhp 317tq. Air/fuels quickly dropped below 10:1 which is off the dyno charts graph. If you've kept up with the maintenence on the truck you should be fine putting a blower on at your mileage.
One thing I will note here though, is that even troyers instructions inform you that will a blower setup tuned properly, oil changes are recommended at 2000 miles or less. And after a 1200 mile trip with my intercooler and everything else online (less the xcalII) I can see why. 1.5 quarts low, blacker than night, and beggin for a change. right at 2000 miles total on it between changes

You should be fine at any conservative level with a good tune. If it isn't broken don't fix it. If you notice a loss in power or drop in efficency then it may be time for a fresh motor/build but 100K isn't anything to worry about.
It was written in the instructions, and after around 8K miles on the blower I can see why. I run only full synthetic (and mine has burned some since the first day I had it) and it comes out black as tar (not thick mind you) and will burn a full 2 quarts in 3000 miles. It became dark after the blower install and I read around several different places to verify this, which is written in several different manufacturer instructions (blower manufacturers not car manufacturers)
Good tips boys, when the time comes it's something to monitor more closely. Do you's think the tranny is up to the task aside from the engine, or is an upgrade the idea? I figure that again when the time comes, I'll upgrade accordingly. I think my head gasket is ka-put, not bad, but concerning. I still may rebuild the engine and start fresh, but who knows. Thanks for the tips guys!
As to the tranny, there are a lot of factors that are unknown as to yours as of yet that will make a difference. Does it have a cooler? Has it been well cared for? Mine's an E40D and it was cared for, and had a cooler with the tow package, but I still added a transgo shift kit to it. It works well, but I know its gonna need some more beef down the road to maintain what I want.
BLUE20004X4,
New member here. been looking for a well populated forum on supercgharging F150's. this looks like one....so at risk of putting my foot in my mouth....
I just put a vortech S-trim on my 94 F150 with 163K miles. Did this about 3 weeks ago and then today just put on the t-rex pump. Still getting it dialed in.. although the wildly fluctuating fuel gage is driving me nuts...but other than
that it's running like it did when I put the blower on the first time at 20K miles.
Apologies if this thread was already beat to death, but thought you might find this info useful.
Kind Regards,

The only way to know if your oil is good or not is to do a UOA. Looking at the color tells you nothing. I've had Mobil 1 go "black" within 1,000 miles, but the OUA at 4,000 miles on this same "black" oil indicated that the oil was still very good with a high TBN.
That being said, I do change it out every 3 - 4K miles.
To the original poster, I put my Procharger on when my truck had 100,000 miles. You may want to do a compression (or leakdown) test to make sure your engine is in decent shape.
At any rate, I've got over 130K miles now and she runs like a champ.
