I am just begining to gather some information. And as you can like tell I am a big novice. I is it possible to turbo charge a fuel injected 4.9L I-6 with a 5spd 3.08 rear end to get a little more hp out of it and more fuel economy and maybe some more torque. Supposedly the stock engine develops 145 hp and 265 ft-lbs. I am not trying to make a drag racer but would like to increase performance and fuel econ. This 12mpg in town is a nightmare at the moment. Yes I have been known to have my foot in it. Any info is appreciated.

Is it possible, yes. Is it feasible, maybe. You will need quite a bit of stuff. First of all, do you know what the compression ratio is on your motor? You will need to size the turbo based on your engine size. 4.9 liters is pretty big so it will require a larger turbo. You will want to contact Garrett to help you size a turbo. You will need the following items, this is a very rough list.

Turbo - 600-1000
Custom Turbo manifold - 800-1000
Wastegate and dump pipe - 300
Custom Downpipe - 300
Oil Lines (for turbo) - 200
Bypass Valve with flange - 250
42lb fuel injectors - 400??
Compressor to Throttle body piping - 300
Silicone Couplers for Cold Pipe - 60
Optional Air-Air Intercooler - 650
255 Fuel Pump - 100
FMU - 200???
ECU Program w/ tune - 550
Boost Gauge - 50

So about 3760 for the turbo "kit" plus supporting mods like fuel, ecu, tuning ,etc.

For the manifold, you will need to find a good performance shop who can fabricate well. There is a shop here in Tallahassee that is really good. It may be difficult to find a flange for the head side of the manifold. If any companies make a header for the 4.9 I-6, you may be in luck. Actually, for the manifold fabrication, look to people who make manifolds for Supras. They are also an inline 6 cylinder.
