skidmarkracing - Did you ever complete this "how-to" guide?? Just wondering - want to build a box but I have never worked with fiberglass.

Just wanted to comment on this...There are many people on this forum who have successfully gotten MUCH MORE than one ten back there. If you are creative enough, you can get lots of different kinds of woofers back there. I have two Kicker Solobaric S12L7's behind mine, and they are some of the deepest subs on the market (notice I did not say THE deepest). It's a matter of craftsmanship and ingenuity. The three JL tens is definitely a sweet setup.

My $.02........... JB

SEMOScrew- I looked into trying to do a ported box, but it just wasn't going to work, especially with 2 Solobaric S12L7's. There is actually only about 2.0 cubic feet of space to work with. You could do one S12L7 ported, and it would seriously friggin' boom. I know a tech here in San Diego who hooked up a system for one of the San Diego Chargers in his Navigator. It had one Solobaric S12L7 ported, and it was very impressive.

I opted not to go with ported because of my fluctuating musical tastes (some days Extreme Metal, some days Rap, some days Jazz). The ported box doesn't really allow for anything except whatever the box is tuned for.

One 12 ported will definitely sound good. Just make sure you push those Solobarics with as much good, clean power as you can afford. I originally put a Fosgate 800.2 running my subs, and it was overheating. Swapped it out for a Fosgate BD1500, and bingo-bango.....No more problems.

Just for sh**s-and-giggles I entered my truck into a USAC competition last weekend, just to see what it would meter out at. I hit 147.2 db. Not bad for a sealed box using only 2 cubic feet of space!! Either way, it's loud.

Whatever you do, think it through and use good quality stuff. Good luck. Check out the link in my signature below and let me know what you think.............JB

JL Audio 10W7

Has anyone ever put a 10W7 in a Super Crew?
The mounting depth is 8", overall depth is 9.63".

I was considering having someone make a custom center console.

JBinSD, I like the solobaric setup, can you elaborate a bit more on the enclosure design?

I don't think you could get 8" of depth behind the seat. The console would probably be your best bet.

Zyg - What specifically do you want to know? It's made from 5/8" MDF on all sides except for the back. The back is fiberglass, to utilize as much space as possible. It takes up the entire storage/cubbyhole area from side to side and back to front.

It will be a pain in the ***, but I could pull it out and take some pix of it in its entirety.

If you have any specific questions, ask................JB

Eeek, no need to pull it out, but thx for the offer .

Anyways, Im just mulling over the project in my head. Ive done some glass work but has been many years. Anyways, I guess what Im most curious about is the box itself.

I dont have the back panel pulled, but just from looking through the compartments it appears the bottom is very irregular, high in the center and lower on the outer edges. Did you use MDF for the bottom then or just lay glass down? Also, for the sides, did you set them in and then have the glass laid across the back and then on the inside of the MDF sides?

How is the whole box fastened in and do you have any rattling? If so how did you handle that?

What type (thickness) glass did you use, what type of resin and how many layers? Thanks a bunch for your time.

Talking Hey CCarrara,

I know a few guys that are just itching to have a mod party. You drive that SCrew down to GA, and we'll fix you up no charge for labor.

I'd like to use the 12" solos like you did, but I dont wanna spend any more money on amps. What do you think would be my best bet with the punch 500a2 that I already have? Do you think that one ported 12" solo would be the way to go and run it at 2ohm or just buy speakers that require less power? And which solo should I go with, is the l7 that much better than the l5? How/where would I port the box? It kinda looks impossible, but someone else had 3 JLs in a slot ported box, but I couldnt quite tell where it was ported at. Thanks for the help

Sorry so many questions!

SemoScrew,

Depends, and maybe. One Kicker Solobaric S12L7 will definitely "bump" in a ported box. As I explained in an earlier post, I got to listen to one in a system done for one of the San Diego Chargers (Damian McIntosh) in his Navigator. It sounded really nice. Loud with lots of boom. It was done using one 12L7 in a ported box. The box was almost 3.0 cubic feet. The most you're going to get is about 2.0 cubic feet. According to Kicker's reccomendations 2.0 cubic feet would be the smallest you should go for one S12L7 ported. It's gonna sound nice!

I haven't really played with ported boxes. They're tuned for a maximum specific freq. I listen to a wide variety of music, so I opted not to go with one 12 ported, but two 12s sealed. If you primarily listen to dance, house, trance, rap, etc...then a ported box will be perfect. It moves lots of air, especially with those 12s.

As far as using the Fosgate 500a, I would step up to a better quality amp. I'm using two Fosgates, but the 500a is one of their lower tier amps commonly sold at best buy. Don't get me wrong, it will probably do exactly what you want it to do for a sub, but there are much better amps out there. Since you already have it, use it.

Just be careful. I originally had a Fosgate 800.2 for my subs. It was overheating: being worked too hard by those Solobarics. So I stepped up to a bd1500 (their top tier amp). No problems since. I'm putting right at 750 watts to each sub. Fosgate BD1500 At 2 ohms, you should get quite a bit of power to the sub, but the lower tier circuitry may not be able to handle the load. Find a shop and talk it over with a knowledgable tech.

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions...JB
