MTX vs Kicker entry level
MTX vs Kicker entry level
Its been awhile since i sold my 15 L7.
I want to get back into some bass but nothing to extreme. This will be going into an 02 mustang that i dd.
I am on a budget and these two systems have my attention
MTX terminator dual 12s with sealed box. (amp will be bought seperate)
Specs
Size 12"
SVC
Rms 400
Peak 1200
The box will barely fit in the trunk opening
sealed enclosure
The second package is a Kicker Dc12 dual 12
Each sub is 300watts and a 150rms for a total of 600watts 300 rms
Comes with a ported enclosure
The kicker is about 80 bucks more.
i am at a crossroad here. Will the kickers be enough to give it some deep base?

Ported will give you some deep bass as long as the box is spec'd correctly. Most prefab boxes come tuned too high usually around 40hz whereas for deep bass you want it more around 32hz. So if it's tuned right, you'll be good, if not you may be missing a little, how much audible difference you'll hear I can't say. Also generally you want about double the ports width between the port opening and any hard surface so it can breath and not give you any unwanted noise, does your trunk allow for this much room?
As for the terminators, I couldn't find too much info on them, but I did find a couple places listing the frequency response as 37-150hz, so when it goes to hit those deep notes it may get a little muddy and distorted. Again for the enclosure, if it isn't spec'd to the subs even being sealed, it can end up sounding terrible.
My opinion though, I'd say the kickers. Low end frequency response for them listed on kicker's site is 27hz, so it beats the mtx subs there. The box is ported, again even if tuning is off some, it'll hit the lows better than the mtx subs. Power handling for them is both about the same rms wise, peak is worthless, as well as size so no real displacement competition going on either. Finally, Kicker has a much better reputation for build quality compared to MTX right now, which is another thing to consider. Kicker may be a bit more expensive than some of its competition but it's still a quality product whereas MTX has gone downhill over the years.
Hope this helps you out some!

much thanks!
It certainly has helped me reconsidered. I was leaning towards the kicker mostly due to the fact i had a kicker before but the mtx is also a good brand amd rms rating of 100 more was having me seco d guessing.
Its not all about too much power on these setups correct? Correct port and box has more impact?

Pizzaman has once again hit the nail on the head. He's obviously a very knowledgeable audiophile and I have to fully agree with him here. If low end is what you're after instead of punch, the Kickers would definitely be the way to go. Keep in mind that the majority of the type of music you prefer to listen to will somewhat dictate your wants/needs as well. As far as build quality goes, I totally concur with the the previous post as well. MTX has DEFINITELY fallen off over the last decade or so. Well put on all counts Pizzaman!
much thanks!

I have two 15" Kicker Comps a while ago and they were great when fed the proper amount of power. Had them for over a year with zero issues before selling the Suburban they were in. It looks like those Dc's are the same as Comps and spec out the same, not sure if they changed the name or something? The 12s and 15s have the same power-handling specs if I remember correctly, and mine were pretty damn loud, especially considering that they were run off an 1100 Watt flea market ProAcoustic amp. (As a side note, the amp is very tiny and now 7 years old and I'm extremely pleased with it. I'll probably buy another as a spare in case they stop making them. I need a really small one to fit under my seat.) They were fed the right amount of power and were great, do NOT over power them. I sold them to a coworker and explicitly told him not to put a stupid-big amp on them because they take such low power for 15s, but he didn't listen. He hooked up a 4000 watt amp and blew them in a week. They weren't much louder with that amp than they were with mine either.
I now have two 12" Kicker CVTs, that are underpowered cause I only listen to country, but they're over 1 1/2 years old and zero issues as well.
I am/was happy with both, but obviously the ported 15s were much louder than the slim 12s in a sealed box.

I believe Dc12 name just stands for Dual Comps 12
It looks like i got the answer i was hoping to get. Going to order on monday.

Oh and sorry for the grammar errors, these tablets do funny things.
As far as the grammar goes we don't sweat the small stuff man! And as long as you're happy with your decisions, ultimately that's all that matters! Best of luck with the setup and kudos to you sir!
As for the power difference goes with the kickers being at 300 and the mtx's being at 400, it wouldn't be noticeable. And mtx likes to overrate their stuff a bit too, especially with their peak ratings. Makes it more appealing to the people who buy the first thing they see and want to have the systems with the "most" watts haha.
I just installed 2 kicker 15 and 6.5 in 4 doors for my daughter and the sounded great. She had a sealed box with 1.5 QF each and about 800 watts going to them and 6.5's had 75 watts RMS each and it was impressive.
Ahh that would make sense! I'm sure you'll be happy. I don't think the Comps can be beat in the bang-fer-da-buck category!
