JL 10w1's vs. Memphis SR 10's

Which one would be the better buy?

I've been to multiple audio shops and at two of them, the only subs they had that would fit under the limited space of under the back seat in my 2002 SC, is the JL 10W1's.

The third shop said when they first opened they sold JL, but came to like Memphis Audio better due to virtually the same quality and sound as JL but just a lot cheaper, so they recommended the Memphis SR series 10's.

I have had a JL 12w0 and have many friends with W7's and W6's, but not too familiar with Memphis other than their top-of-the line MOJO's and their door speakers.

I have a JL 250/1 amp, which the shops that sold the 10w1's said would be perfect for 2 of those. Not sure if it would be good for the SR 10's as well.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks man, that helps a lot. Would my amp be sufficient to power two of them?

depends on if the amp is 1 ohm or 2 ohm stable, as well as if you get 2 ohm or 4 ohm subs, as well as if you get single voice coil or dual voice coil subs. its a lot of math but any stereo guy who knows anything can help you at the store. each sub will want around 150 watts rms though, so youll need at least 300. a quick way to check is look at the fuse on the side of your amp. if it says 25, multiply it by 10 and thats 250 watts your amp puts out

Measuring by fuse isn't always right. Best example I can come up with is the mmats d300hc, most people run them with 80 amps of fusing, rated at 300 rms, but been clamped at well over 1500rms. One of the best old school cheater amps made.

Thanks for the input and help guys. Yeah, one thing I don't know about is audio equipment. So I don't know the math to calculate all that.

It's just weird that the two shops pushing the JL's said the JX250/1 is exactly what they would use for two W1's and then the Memphis shop said it was a little underpowered for the two SR 10's. I guess the SR 10's might be rated for more power or something.

The reason I'm so adamant on using this amp is because I've only had it a few months and am just trying to save as much money as possible.

9 times out of 10 that fuse trick works. i worked here 6 years and only had a few (old punch amps) beat it.

anyways your amp is 250 watts at 2 ohms. for jls that is just about right. just get 2 single voice coil 4 ohm subs and wire them down to 2 ohm. the memphis will be slightly underpowered, as memphis are louder but slightly less clean

Thanks man you have been a big help.

I think I'm gonna go with Memphis. I will use the amp I have for now and will eventually get a more powerful one in the future when I have more money to spend on it.

Thanks again!

not a problem, just remember when you go get those news subs to let the guy know that your amp is only 2 ohm stable, not 1 ohm. good luck!

Just a little update: I'm actually getting the Memphis Power Reference or "PR" series 10's and a Memphis SR500.1 amp put in this Friday at that same shop. They are having a really good Black Friday sale which allowed me to afford everything right now.

I am also buying my buddies old Pioneer flip-out head unit to accompany everything.

I will update again with pictures and stuff when everything is put in.
