Sub Mount Depth

I was wondering how deep of a sub everyone is fitting in their 04-08 scew/scabs. If you could list the sub, mounting depth, and what box you have, that would be great.

Can I put a sub listed as having 6" top-mount depth in a box saying that is has a 6 1/8" mounting depth?
Does that mean it will leave only an 1/8th" between the magnet and inside wall of the box, or does that mean up to a 6 1/8th deep woofer is fine?

That means you'll only have an 1/8" left between the magnet and the back of the box.

Would you say that is okay, or is there a recommended amount of space that I should allow?

Depends on the sub and design on the box. If it's vented through the magnet then I'd try to leave at least a 1/4", however it's a solid magnet than you could probably get away with it.

But if the box has no room for air to flow around the sub, then I'd try to leave some room underneath. If the air hits "choke points" in the box trying to move around the sub then it can distort the sound/damage the sub.

This makes sense. I'm assuming this is a vented magnet:

And this is solid...

Correct?

yes, and depending on your space you can get shallow subs that are specifically made for shorter mounting depths in mind

I have a pair of shallow Rockford P3S 12" subs. They need about 3.5" of mounting depth. I have no seat lift kit, and the seats lay down completely flat. The box is a hair too small but they still sound great and they're downfiring.

I put in 2 Alpine swr-1223d subs mounting depth of 6 3/8. I built my own box. but I also had to put in the seat lift kit from LMI.
