Alpine SWR-823d or JL 6w3v3

i've been trying to decide what sub i wanna run under the seat of my '10 fx2 screw. ive decided to stick with one sub for now, but i will more then likely add another down the road. i think i have it narrowed down to the 8" Alpine SWR-823D or a 6.5" JL 6w3v3. if i go with the alpine, then im gonna build a sealed box because i wouldnt know how to get the dimensions right for the port and all in a size to fit under my seat. the specs call for .15-.5 cu ft and the sealed box im thinking of building would be .357 after counting for speaker displacement. what are your thoughts on that? would you agree thats a good airspace to stick with or what do you recommend?

on the other hand, if i go with the JL 6w3v3, i can build a ported box to spec and fit perfectly under my seat. it would be the exact measurements that JL recommend for the ported box on their site.

before anyone chimes in on subwoofer size, i dont wanna go any bigger then 8" subs. i love the way my 8"s in the past sound and im not looking to wake the neighborhood, i just enjoy some bass. what would you go with?

right now i have a memphis 300 watt, but like jl memphis amps are highly underated so it pushes more then you think. it made my solo baric L7 hit hard for sure....but the amp might be changing.

I would recommend the alpine sub then. They can be a little power hungry. You could do a ported box for the alpine too.

You don't have to use the exact dimensions they give you, as long as the box volume is the same you will be ok.

yea im leaning towards alpine now. i would like to do a ported box, but was unsure how to figure out the size it needed to be and all. i googled it and found a port calculator and i guess its alot easier then i thought it would be. you just enter the volume of the box and the frequency you want, along with the width and thickness you want it, and it gives you the port length. i thought it was alot more difficult then that....another question, as far as the volume, how do you take in to consideration the port?. do you subtract the wood from the port along with the air space inside the port from the overall volume?...i entered it having .5 cu ft tuned at 35 HZ after the port. (well .492 to be exaxt). do this sound like a good design?

Yes you subtract the volume inside the port from the gross internal volume.

.5cft sounds about right after you subtract the port and sub displacement from the gross volume of .7cft.

Just in case you have not seen it already, Alpine does make a nice ported box with the 8 in it. It comes wired to 2ohms though.

yea i saw that, nice but too expensive for my taste. id rather buy the sub and build the box myself....whats wrong with it being wired to 2 ohm?

I wasn't sure if you needed 2 or 4ohms for your amp.

oh ok, yea im gonna be running it @ 4 ohms with the amp i have now, i just thought you was gonna say something bad about running subs at 2 ohms so was curious lol. you have any clue how to calculate the correct port size for a box? i used a calculator online and it seem like each time i do it the number changes. so if i cant find someone to tell me exact im gonna have to go with a sealed box.

If you choose the Elemental Designs sub, they will also help you design a box with the proper port size and volume. This is a smaller manufacturer that you can actually talk to on the phone when you call, very nice folks to deal with.

I'm not entirely sure myself I have only built sealed boxes. I have a local audio shop build all of my ported/bandpass boxes for me.

I saw you posted in the Alpine sub thread on DIYMA. Maybe if you make a new thread someone can help you on that site. If not Alpine should have a tech support department to help you out. "jim walter" is on DIYMA and he works at Alpine.
