Subwoofer Help Please.................

Okay guys my head is going to explode soon if I don't get the answer to this question. What will sound better two 10 inch subs that are just okay or one good subwoofer? I am thinking of running two 10 inch shallow mount pioneers probably 150 watts RMS a piece or one 10 inch JL Audio W3 with 500 watts RMS. Will the two tens sound better because the sound will be distributed in the truck better or will the one JL blow the two Pioneers away?

Well I would either run these Pioneer TS-SW2501S4 or these Polk Audio MM1040. Which I am running one of the Polk's right now as you can see in my signature and that sucker pounds. The only reason I'm thinking I can't run the Polk's is due to not enough room between the box and the floor. The Polk's have a full 1" inch excursion and I found this out the hard way when I first got it and it was bottoming out on the floor. I found a box that has 1.5 inches between the floor but I am not sure if that would be enough room for the Polk's to not bottom out or not?

the pioneer slim mount subs are great quality subs. id say depending on your space available do 2 10"s or 1 12"

I will say from experience, that 2 Infinity Kappa 102.7's in a fox box definitely sounds way better than 1 JLW3V3 in that same box with the other hole sealed.

But then again, the Infinity's are a little better than just "OK" subs, but still, that pair blew the "great" JL sub by itself out of the water.

Out of the two you listed, I would go with the JL. I haven't heard very many positive things about the Pioneer shallow subs. Sure they're shallow, but they sound like a "shallow" sub from what I've read. Ie, very little bottom end and not that musical. Like MGDfan said, quality trumps quantity.

If you're only going to send the Pioneers 150 watts each, or 300 watts total, and you're going to send the JL 500 watts, the Pioneers are going to have the immediate advantage over the JL with surface area on paper. You would have a 3 dB gain in output from the get-go with the Pioneers because you are going to use two 10's instead of a single 10 assuming that the amount of power for each system is equal. However, with 300 watts RMS compared to 500 watts RMS on a single driver, the single driver will be 0.8 dB behind the pair of 12's. How did I calculate that? Take 500 /300 (your wattage figures) and you get 1.66. Press the "log" key on your calculator and you get 0.22. Multiply 0.22 * 10 and you get a difference of 2.2 dB in output. The latter was just for a single driver of equal size though. So when you consider that 2 10's have a 3 dB advantage over a single 10 with the same amount of power for each system, you subtract 2.2 from 3 dB and you get your 0.8 dB variance.

So in closing, you won't see that much of a difference in output between the two because less than 1 dB is barely detectable by the human ear.

I have the box that your looking at and I was also looking at those two subs your talking about. The JL I went with isnt suppose to fit in the box, its suppose to be off by a half of an inch if I remember. I spoke to several people at Crutchfield and we came up with a solution of installing a rubber ring around the base of the sub where the screws go and it worked. To me JL has some of the best hitting subs (without getting into competition equipment). I responding to your question on my page and sent you a link to the sub but here it goes again

http://signature.crutchfield.com/s_1...-2.html?tp=111

Remember this is a 2 ohm sub but they do have it in 4 and 8 ohm, FYI.

I'm only pushing 400W RMS to this sub which will handle 500W RMS b/c of my amp and I don't have it turned up 3/4 of the way and it sounds amazing, you can't go wrong. You know what you do, buy it from Crutchfield b/c you can return it in 30 days, listening to it, see if you like it, if not return it at no charge. Hope this helps, let me know that you end up doing

Thanks guys for all of your input. I looked around some more and found www.foxacoustics.com and there boxes seem really nice and give you more mounting depth which is a plus. So this is the last question on a setup I am thinking about.

This box

http://www.foxacoustics.com/ProductD...150%2D210%2D04

This Amp to push my door speakers and two subs

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...ine+PDX-5.html

These two subs

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...+SWE-1043.html

I know the box air space is a little short on the volume for the subs. I did a bunch of research on the amp and everyone has nothing but good things for the most part to say about it and supposedly what alpine rates it at is a little conservative it actually puts out quite a bit of power. The good thing about the box too is I will not have to lift my seats and the subs supposedly got descent reviews.

Screw it.... This is what I am going to go with.

Enclosure

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-7lcPBk7...res-Black.html

Amp

http://signature.crutchfield.com/s_1...v2.html?tp=115

Sub

http://signature.crutchfield.com/s_1....html?tp=27741

I don't think I can go wrong with this setup and hopefully it hits way harder than my setup now.

I don't believe that box will fit a 10W3V3. It says mounting depth is 5.8125 for the box, 5 7/8 = 5.875. Nope, won't fit without an aforementioned rubber ring of some sort or a spacer - which I would shy away from.

Fox does make a single 10" sub box that will fit a 10W3V3 though:

And if you are spending that much please just get the dual fox box and two W3's...you'll regret not later. Your single sub setup will sound great, but you will always say "damn, I wish I would have gotten two..."

Yeah I was going to use a spacer with that Q-Logic enclosure, but if Fox Acoustics makes a box that will fit it and is cheaper might as well go that route. I will have to decide if I want to go with two JL's or one. Decisions.....Decisions.......
