Help on watts

I was at my local stereo place today talking about putting subs in. It leads into putting 2 10's and a 500.2 amp to power them. I knew I wanted 2 ohms, but I told him I didn't want only 250 watts to each sub. He said that the 500 would give out 500 to each sub. I didn't think this was right. I've got kicker components now and a 400.2 kicker amp..it's sure as hell not givin out 400 to each speaker.

Any help with this would be great, if it turns out he's wrong do I need a 1000 watt amp to give 500 to each? I think Ill be goin with JL only because they're my favorite.

what were the speaker and amp models and brand? what is your reasoning for wanting specifically 2ohm subs?

yeah, what are the model numbers of what you listed? The sales guy might be right. A lot of amps will do 250x2 at 4 ohms and 500x2 at 2 ohms. But without more info theres no way for us to help you.

The shop always seems to push kicker. I'm pretty sure he was talking about a kicker amp and two kicker 10's. I do not know any of the model numbers because we didn't go too far into it. To answer your question jr I don't truly have a reason for 2 ohms specifically, but, I have heard that 2 ohms will "hit" harder than 4 ohm subs. And for the power I'm wanting to give them I want to make the most out of them.

Don't really know too much about this please correct me.

Thanks, TX

2 ohm subs wont hit any harder than 4 ohm subs. its all in how they are wired up to the amplifier and what the amp is rated for.
for instance if you have 2 2 ohm svc subs they can be wired in series or parallel. series will net a 4 ohm load to the amp and parallel will give you a 1 ohm load to the amp.
or you can have 2 4 ohm svc subs and wire them in series giving you an 8 ohm load or in parallel giving you a 2 ohm load to your amp.

what you want is the speakers after they are wired up to match what the amp is rated for. say if you have a 1 channel mono amp that is rated for lets say 2 ohms minimuim load then you dont want to connect 2 2ohm svc subs in parallel = 1 ohm to the amplifier because the resistance would be to much for the amp to safely handle and it would go into protect mode and overheat and probally fail.

there are several websites you can look up to learn a little more about how to wire them up and what the terms mean and such. so you can be a little edjumacated when you go into those shops and talk about products there selling. here are a couple you can try.

i know in Houston there are lots of shops that deal in car audio and electronics. go to a few different ones and talk to the people there and ask questions usually the ones that are willing to take the time to answer your questions are the better shops that will work with you and not just try to sell you something just to get your money and push you out the door.
