Budget Speakers

So I am looking to get some better sound from my system.

I have upgraded the HU to the Kenwood DNX7120, and I really like it.
I was thinking about upgrading the Front speakers and possibly the rears too.

Im not exactly an audiophile per say, but I can tell a difference when I am in other peoples cars.

I was thinking that I could get some components for up front...maybe some Alpine Type-S?
And then something for the back.

I dont really want to spend a lot of money, but I would like to get some decent speakers.

I would also put on amp in the near future just not sure I want to spend that money right now.
If its easier to do the Amp at the same though I would go ahead and do it while I am in there.

What do you guys think?

Pretty much the same situation here...cheap steps is how I would like to go about it. I only have the head unit as well.

I am by no means knowledgeable about speakers but I took the advice from several postings and bought PolK DB571's from Crutchfield for $75/set with the connectors. It took all of 15 minutes to remove and replace the stock ones with the Polks in the front.

To me they sound great although with the stock head unit I can tell they could sound MUCH better with an amp. When I turn it up to midway and higher they really sound great...of course now I am thinking of moving them to the back and geting Pold DB6501 components and an amp...and maybe a new HU...well, you get the idea

Good luck.

One thing you'll learn is although crutchfield has wonderful customer service, their prices can be near double other dealers. I've been there and over paid considerably on stuff. So shop cructhfield and buy someplace else like onlinecarstereo.com, woofersect.com, sonicelectronix.com and ca.com has a list of dealers as soon as you go to their website.

Well on the components, where would I mount the tweeter?

Ive seen it done on the Pillar by the windshield but how hard is that to do?
Do I just bust out the dremel and go to town on the plastic?

When you pop off your front speaker panels, you will note there is already a location above the speakers that a tweeter would normally go if you want to put it there.

Sound stage wise it's best to locate the tweeters on the pillars. There are ways to do it but it's not easy to keep it stealthy. Anyone that knows car audio is going to see you also know car audio and the chances your stuff might get stolen is drastically increased. The door location isn't too bad though so IMO, just use it.

Here's a thread talking about pod gauges which is pretty much the same location and idea.
