Sub cuts in and out
Sub cuts in and out
So i just put in a Kicker Compvr 400rms 800 peak 4ohm dvc sub in my truck in a 1cuft sealed enclosure, exactly what it called for and recommended. I put it to a 500 watt rms at 2 ohm alpine mpr -m500 amp.
I had no problem the first 2 or 3 days with the sub, but it being in for 5 days, it cuts out at any volume, and plays really softly and then cuts back in and plays as if nothing was wrong, ive been smelling a burning like smell from the sub since i got it, don't have the bass boost set at all and the gain is at norm. on the amp. I haven't messed with anything but the lpf that i set on 120. I ran the sub hard the first day or 2 just because it was my first time having one and it sounded awesome. So i checked all my wires, amp stays on when this happens, and so i took out the sub, checked the internal wiring, ( ii have it wired for a 2ohm load) and it was all good, crutchfield told me it might be a coil that's bad and to run it 1 coil hooked up at a time, i did this and ran it for a min or 2 on each one and sounded fine. I don't know what else it could be, is it just the sub breaking in? My lights dim on med. volume with with high bass eq on my sony head unit. so did i fry my sub or what?
any help would be greatly appreciated. just frustrates me so much to spend all this time getting what i finally wanted for audio and it stop working right a few days in.

Burning is never good.
Crutchfield told you to run one coil at a time
?!? Check your gains, then lower the bass eq. Grab a DMM and check the resistances of each coil. Watch your amp, is it going into a protection mode? If so, which protection (voltage, low imped., etc.)

i dont know if its going into protection mode. it would make sense.. since the speaker kicks back in like nothing is wrong and blasts at full volume like nothing when it works. It dident happen today but i kept it low. My lights were dimming a bit when i turned it up maybe im not getting enough power to the amp for to long of a time and its cutting back. I will have to get a capacitor and a better battery when i can. I read that some of the new kickers have a weird smell when breaking in, such as extra glue burning off and what not, but i dont know how much of it is true.
they dont cut out 100 percent, only drop significantly. I was just messing with the wires behind the head unit, and it seemed to do it more frequently when iw as doing that. so i took em out and reput them all in tight, Amp stays full power. But i will check the fuse to make sure. I pulled the sub from the box, and checked all the wiring, i used brand new 12ga. speaker wire from the amp to the sub?
