I agree companies have gotten so much better now, and what was insane then isnt the same now. Plus, transfer function makes certain things act so different in the different enviroments.

Well hey then guys....

it should be "even easier" to make a system that makes me happy, than it was 20 years ago, huh ?
Oh hey BTW, I had my system from back then checked with a DB meter at 142db's. Not bad for two little lightweight 10"s. Granted, I had lots of mids and highs that helped contribute to that.

In any case, just to reitterate Low_e, Styx, and everyone, I guess what I'm looking for is sort of a "hybrid system".... which is to say, I want it to have a lot of clean bass, but it doesn't need "quite" two 18"s and 2000wts :-) .....and at the same time, I want it to be clean, crisp, and seperated, but it doesn't have to be "quite" reference / show quality. I guess you could say, somewhere in between what the kids like, and what car stereo contest judges like :-)

Anyway, nobody has given me any suggestions, on "best bang for the buck" amps ? I'm thinking $500 to $700 total... whether it be 1 amp or 2....

Thanks,
Fish

BTW, I might just order that Alpine CDA-9887 (based on you guys good advice) within the next week..... Then, that will give me the incentive, to start getting my amp(s) and speakers together ASAP.
I know I had said, I hoped to have it all finished early next year.... But once I get the wheels turning on something like this, I just can't think about anything else until it's finished ! :-) LOL

I think you would be more than satisfied with a setup similar to what Bartak had/what im building....

2 separate amps
a set of high powered, high quality 2 way comps
2 good 12" subwoofers

Bartak ran Arc Audio amps, Im going to be running one of those for my subwoofers. My comps will be pushed by a USamps 2 channel.

Other good companies for amps are Zapco, Audison, Eclipse, sundown Audio to name a few...

So then I had kids coming up and asking, "What do you have ? four 12"s ? .... couple of 15"s ? .....
> Two 10"s ! No way ! Those must be like pro series, huh ? How many wt's ?!?! Pretty funny really.

Anyway, I had lots of nice mids and highs wrapped all the way around me too. And another amazing thing about that system, is that it worked flawlessly for 8 years ! Yes, 8 years without blowing anything !

Honestly, if I could create another system that only sounded "as good" as that one did, it would be pretty darn cool. Then again, that system always blew away much higher dollar systems, than it should have been able to.

Lest anyone say, "Well you must think you know what your doing... why are you asking us" ?.....
Answer ? I played with a whole bunch of different systems in my old Chevy S-10 that "all flat out sucked"..... Then one day {somewhat out of previous experiences, but a good chunk of luck involved too} I finally hit the nail on the head.
BTW, I tried a couple of times after that, to "improve" that setup.... but everything I tried, just brought it back down a notch, or two, and so I'd go right back to how it was, previous.

So hey now, not Rockford Amps ? What then ? Who makes the most "clean, continuous power, for the $" ??? Have I heard of them ? Name brand, or not ?

Hey Styx, you said > your gonna need way more than 2 12's and 600 watts to get that blocks away boom you want < So one would think.... but in my personal experiences, only a couple "small subs" > set up correctly < will do SOOO much more, than 6 15"s and 2000wts > set up wrong. I used to see that all the time.

Peace,
Fish
Im assuming those series ones were rockford... last week i took 2 series one 10's from 1992 out of a car.. they still worked and were only rated at 20watts rms... they were powered by a rockford punch 40... 20 watts rms x2. needless to say they sounded like dookie, but the same thing goes that they were probably banging back in their day, they just sounded like crap compared to new stuff, 35 dollar 10's that we have lying around sound better than they did. My advice is to forget about the two 10's you had before and how they sounded and look into something mid-high range that is up to date. Have you checked out some shops around where you live to hear what you can get nowadays and the price ranges because they are going to be completely different.

not to be the bearer of bad news but 142 dB on a mic 10-20 years ago isnt the same as 142 dB on a legal on the dash measured with a termlab pressure sensor (the most accurate and consistent way of measuring spl from vehicle to vehicle) up until about 5 years ago the old school mics could be off by 10 dB or more. for instance when I got into audio I had 2 15's sealed with 900 watts in a minivan lay down 142 on an old audiocontrol mic.. about 2-3 years later I had 2 10's in a ported box with 1800 watts in a hatchback. now to my ear the 2 10's were WAY louder than the 15's but on the new termlab they only metered 143 dB.. which means the data from the audiocontrol mic was crap

I'll put a link to this question you have but sadly i doubt this set up will leave room for an alarm as it costed around 2k maybe more but not by much it was in a previously owned 04 F150 heritage

2 10" kicker comp vr series subs. run by earthquake amp (3000 watts @2ohm load)powered by a 4 farad stiffie.alpine doors (5 1/4 fronts, 6x9 rear)a 12" drop down screen for dvds. and box is made from bassworx, made specially made for my extended cab.subs are wired in a 2 ohm load series parallel. truck no longer owned :'(

sorry i didnt really read all the criteria but since you removed the back seat there's pretty much endless amount that you can do, but with the 2k budget i'd suggest a custom made box not purchased fit to hold two 12" woofers and not the cheap ones either preferably Rockford Fosgate T1's with a 1500 RMS amp or more, and all four new speakers and i guess a decent deck with ATLEAST 4 guage wiring with about a 200-250 amp fuse and possibly a 2-4 farad stiffening cap, sounds like alot but should range around the 2k area, maybe more but guaranteed worth it.

Try lookin into some real brands like RE, Fi, SS, etc.
