Using less volume?

I've read that you can use pollifill or some type of stuffing in a box to "fool" the sub into thinking it in a larger box. My question is how much can you downsize the box by? I'm going with a sealed enclosure for a single 12" Kenwwod W3011, it reccommends 1.25cu ft. Is there a certain percentage I should stay within?

Also, how much space should I leave between the wall and the back of the sub? thanks

Actually not to long after I posted the question I found a scale for the sub that for tighter bass I can go as low as .8cu ft...guess I'll just find something between the two.

You wont get a huge difference... The polyfill trick is just for people who accidently miscalculated the airspace and need to make up .1 or .2 cuft. (And feel its absolutely necessary...)

I put a pillow in my box which i felt was too big for the sub I have.... like you said it made it crisper and just sounded better all around.

Crisper?!? If anything it would let it loosen up a bit more... Odd.

Agreed. Polyfill makes the sub think the box is bigger, not smaller. If you want to make the box smaller to "tighten up" the bass, you can just put a known volume of wood in the box to lessen the airspace (I'd recommend glueing / screwing it down, lol, or don't slam on the brakes).

Thanks for all the info. I'm gonna do the best to keep it around where it should be...probably won't go below 1 cu ft for sure. I started getting into some designing for the consol last night. Thanks again!
