No expert, but there is a reason that the type r's are so much cheaper. The type r's are pretty good mid-level subs but the w7's are real top shelf stuff (some argue that they are overpriced but no one seems to question their quality). Alpine makes a type X sub which is more comparable to the W7 (and even the type X is not held in the same regard).

W7s are so incredibly overpriced. Sure, its a pretty good driver, but there are subs far and beyond the W7 that you can get for less...

The Type X isnt that great. I would take a Type-R before I put my hands anywhere near a Type-X.

It depends are you going for boom or sound?

I absolutely hate boom. I love low tight bass. I like to feel every vibration of the B string on a bass guitar and feel the bass drum pounding my internal organs. Boomy bass makes me want to have my ears surgically removed from my head.

I personally think you would have a hard time finding a better sub than the w7 but I am very biased towards the w7's. They make the type of bass that I love. When coupled with an aplifier with a really high damping factor, the w7's really shine. Most people with w7's never experience their full potential.

Image Dynamics IDMAX 12". Authorized will run around $500 but amazing subs. I also think the 12" Stereo Integrity Mag is a great choice. JL subs are awesome but to me, overpriced. $799 for a 12W7 from Crutchfield, $499 for an IDMAX from woofersetc (both authorized dealers). Everyone here knows I am partial to ID but that is because they make great subs for almost any budget.

Where are you going to put that huge box in the cab of your truck?

Dimensions (W x H x D): 22.75" x 15.5" x 15.5"

W7 will walk all over a TypeR. A TypeR gets decently loud at a decent price....thats it.

The JL, while def. not the best sounding sub, will still smoke the TypeR in SQ and more than likely output too.

Leagues apart....

There are subs out there that will do everything a W7 will do, and some even do it better, for less. Just need to keep your eyes peeled.
