Where to get MDF?

I am wanting to build a box for under my rear seat in my truck, but I'm not sure where to go to get the MDF to build it with. I haven't been out to look yet, but I didn't want to just drive around and waste a lot of gas. So does anyone know if you can get MDF at a Home Depot or Lowes or do I need to go somewhere else to get some?

Thanks for the help.

you can buy MDF from pretty much everywhere. I dont know what lowes is because we dont have those in canada, but if I were wanting to go buy a sheet of MDF, a place like home depot would work perfectly fine.

One sheet will run you about $30 at Lowe's or Home Depot.

I usually buy it from Home Depot since that is the closest store to me, and it is kept indoors at the store which is nice.

Expect $20-$30 for a sheet of 49" x 98" 3/4" thick MDF. I am not sure why the Home Depot sells it with an extra inch width and 2 inches length, but hey...

If you can't figure out where to get mdf, i seriously doubt you have the know-how to build a box.

Dude, why? Sensless coments like this aren't needed. The man is giving it a try. He's just asking for some help finding the materials.

The Depot has always been my choice for a quick sheet. If I am building a large box then I like building my boxes out of Trupan. It's a lighter weight MDF wood that I get from Paxton Woods here in Kansas City. I'm sure other places carry it. A standard 3/4 inch 4x8 sheet of MDF weighs 96 lbs where a sheet of Trupan Light-weight MDF weighs 66 lbs. Huge difference when you're trying to muscle the sheet on the table saw by yourself. Years ago I invested in a nice Milwaukee vertical panel saw. With Trupan sometimes your speaker weighs more than your enclosure.

Great post KC , I would much rather see a guy build his own box than buy a prefab .Even if it doesn't turn out the best the first time , this is how people learn , trial and error .

Sorry bout the comment, i feel bad now. Ill add some tips then!

If your tryin to sqeeze the box in somewhere tight, you can always buy 5/8" MDF instead of 3/4. Youll gain a 1/4 inch. Doesnt sound like much but if your box is as tight as mine youll need it. Don't skimp on the proper silicone or you'll be hearing it. I built the whole box minus the front; glued it then siliconed all the inside edges, then put the front on and stuck my hand in the sub hole to caulk the rest. You can pick up some cheap upholstry at home depot too. Don't paint it, thats just ugly.

As for Lowes, we do have it in canada now only i havent seen one yet. Just the commercials.

And the question is: how could there be a light-weight MDF, wouldnt that just be LDF?? I mean, medium density is medium density.

I've never used it, but have heard of it..

Google search for LITE MDF or TRUPAN MDF
