Do I need to amp my components?
Do I need to amp my components?
I'd like to improve the stock system to something with more clarity and a little bit of low end thump but I am not into big boomy bass.
Recently replaced by head unit with a JVC double din unit (20W/ch RMS) - big difference in sound and a lot more features.
Based on recommendation from other forums I've got a pair of CDT CL61A (6.5", 120W RMS, 91 db sensitivity) components to install. If I install these without an amp could these sound good or should I expect them to be totally lacking?
If you think an amp should be installed with the components (which I think the answer will be yes) then do components supply a decent amount of bass or should I also plan on a sub? I was thinking of going with a 2 ch amp (100w/ch) and run the rears off of the head unit, but if a sub is a certainty then maybe I should go with a 4 channel and use the 2nd pair of channels to bridge for a sub in the future? Guess I could always install a 2nd amp if I needed to. If I installed a sub I think I'd be looking a something like a single 8" or 10" in a sealed box.
Oh yeah - where do you guys put your amps?
I'd appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

You know it, bro. You definitely need to amp those babies.
Since you said you are not looking for a lot of bass, I would try what you are planning. Get the 2 channel amp and see if it satisfies your thirst for bass. I have never heard the CDTs, so can't comment on how much bass they put out. But, if you set the crossover freq. on your amp low enough (~70hz), that might do it for you. If not, you can always add another amp and sub.
I have one amp under my drivers seat and one under the front middle seat/console. Others put them behind the back seat, but that is more work than I wanted to do.
Good luck and be sure to post if you have more questions. There are some knowledgeable people on this board.
