Panel trim

Yes, for this installation with the 3/4" MDF Baffle I had to trim off most of the OEM speaker 'cowling' from the trim panel. Nothing you can see with the speaker cover on.

I'll take photos of the installation and post them tomorrow.

Easy to trim off with a roto zip bit.

Photo of trim install

Here's the front door trim panel reinstalled and without the speaker grill. To fit the MB Quart Reference 6.5", plus a 3/4" baffle, plus a 1/4" gasket of butyl and ensolite requires almost complete removal of the OEM speaker 'cowling.'

I use a Dewalt rotory tool with a plastic trim bit. The speaker grill completely hides it. The plastic cuts like butter with this tool and I trim by hand. Then deflash with a file.

The one inch MB Quart titanium dome tweet fits perfectly in the OEM hole behind the speaker grill. I want a stealth install, so I don't raise it up any higher than that, otherwise I'd be tempted to mount it in the upper triangular section of this panel where the defrost vent is.

Looks great! One more question though. How do you think the MB Quartz will sound with just the factory radio with no amps? I was just thinking when i go to sell my truck or trade it, i would try to remove as much of the sound system. They never give you anything for the extra's. After your install, you can't put the stock speakers back in.

OEM speakers

Well MBQ's sound better than the OEM's off the HU, but if you ever sell the truck, then swap out the MBQ's with any cheaper 6.5".

You can by 6.5" speakers with better sensitivity than the MBQ's though, so they do need a little volume to really come to life...
