Help... Germs sound bad

I had to have installed something wrong. I am admitting it now. I finally had to give up at 2AM last night so that I could be awake through my 7:30AM sales meeting.

I spent yesterday hooking up my new US Amps MD22 to drive my JL and my Germs in the doors to replace the PowerBass components I had in there before. I am running them bridged off of a PG Tantrum 600.4. Simply do not sound good at all. The volume levels are low even with the Gains set to the same place they were on the PBs and I am getting almost nothing from the tweeters at all. I checked the wiring and have good power everywhere. I even hooked the PBs back up and they sound as good as they have all along.

What is it that is wrong. Is it the Crossover settings? If it helps, I am not getting anything from the tweeter light built into the crossover.

I am getting good bass from the MD22 and the JL. It's the Germs. At this point, I have no rear fill, as I have disconnected them from the amps and not hooked them to the HU and very poor sounding expensive components up front. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Mine came today so, I can not be any immediate help. Look the manual over good and make sure one of the jumpers is not in the wrong spot.

I was a little disappointed that there is really no tweeter mounting hardware for the tweets. Cut a hole and hot glue it. I am not really a fan of that.

Question, Did you "y" the inputs going to the crossover...

in other words, your -wire to -Woofer AND -Tweeter, then your +wire to +Woofer AND +Tweeter..
If not, thats your problem...

Yes. That does suck. They give you the screws, but no bracket. Makes no sense. I didn't want to glue them in so that I would be able to move them to another truck later, so I ended up fabricating a bracket.

Let me know what you come up with. I have to mess with the jumpers, which I am not looking forward to considering I mounted the xovers in the doors.

As an aside, mount the xovers where you can get to them fairly easily. From what I read they need to be adjusted quite a bit to get just right. I am going to move mine when I redo my wiring, which is part of phase 2 of this project. I bet it is one of those jumper settings, which are all pretty confusing to me. I will play with them to see if it works. I don't know if I will get to them tonight. I hope so. I am sure looking forward to my expected sound quality.

Yes. I split the positive and the negative on the existing wire making them into two positives and two negatives. I then installed them in the xover as the manual depicts on the second to last page.

Cool, just checking, I almost missed that on my install.. and I read the install manual twice.. still didn't sink in my head intil I saw the pic... LOL

then it has to be a jumper set wrong, I do remember reading that if a jumper is set wrong the Tweeter or Woofer will not play...

What jumper did you use for your truck?

If there is a light bulb in the xover on the tweeter circuit, it is there to absorb any dc voltage (otherwise known as clipping) so the fact that it is not lighting up is a GOOD thing.

Thanks guys. It was a jumper setting. Things are good now with the exception of the PG Tantrum, which blew a channel half way through my install. It's fine though. I'm pushing the Germs with the USAmps MD22 and the JL with the Kicker400.1 and it sounds good.

I need to tune it, but maybe I'll do that when I get all the deadener in.

So are you satisfied with the germs? Are they sounding good enough to justify the $ spent on them, or if you had it to do over again would you have went with something else?

They are pretty damn awesome. I am pushing them with 200w and they handle everything I can give them. Now I know why rear fill is not needed. My only complaints are:
1) The manual sucks and has errors in it.
2) These make my sub sound like it's not even there. Easy enough to solve though. I am going to get another 10 and a better sub amp. No idea what brands now, but it will be something that complements these components well.

If you don't have them, get them. I can't imaging what tehy are going to sound like with the cab deadened.

Quick note. Don told me they need about 10 hours of moderate volume to break them in. After that, have at it and they should sound even better. I sure hope I can get mine in tonight or tomorrow.
