Mounting Subs?
A ring is mainly used as a spacer, but if you are using a fiberglass box it gives you something to mold the speaker cutout around, plus something sturdier to mount the sub to. If its on a wooden box it will also allow you to use longer screws and bet a little more 'bite' from the screws.
If your sub already has a gasket around the mounting flange, then just cinch the sub to the box tight and your set. A lot of people like to use the T Nuts on the inside of the box, then bolt the sub in. You can get the sub attached to the box TIGHT that way, plus dont have to worry about stripping out the wood.
I just use sheetrock screws and screw them down as tight as possible without stripping the holes out. You have to have the 'feel'
so you dont strip the holes out. Ive never had a problem with air leaking out by just screwing them in like that. If you strip out a hole, then just rotate the sub a little bit and screw new holes.
