Installing 6.5s upfront

When the cold weather here passes this week I'm looking at throwing the 6.5" coax set I have up front until I decide on a set of component speakers. I already have the amp setup, and speaker wire run so it should be decently easy from what I see.

My question is on installing the 6.5s in the door panel. From taking a few measurements and trying to test fit the speakers, it looks like I will have to trim a small section of the plastic around the speaker to get it to fit. Before I start hacking up my truck, I thought I would try to find out how most on here have installed their component sets. Every search I have done shows everyone mentioning trimming the panels, but not exactly what part they trim.

When installing the speaker, have you typically installed the speaker with the stock mounting bolts that snap into the door panel, or do you mount the speaker to the door, and trim the plastic slightly so that the door panel will not rub on the speaker when installing it? I know that I will have to have a partial mouting plate to cover a portion of the 4x6 hole when mounting the speaker, and have alredy a pair fabbed up from when I installed the 5 1/4" set in the rear doors.

Any input you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks in advace

I had to modify some to get them in my doors, I used Metra adapters and since the guy above made his own that may have been the difference. The Polks are a cast aluminum basket and there is enough meat around the outer edge to gently rework the shape of them.

Thanks F150Truck'in, I'll have to look into the Polks. My friend has two sets of the MMC6500s in his Chevy Colorado, and I was decently impressed with their performance.

Currently I have two sets of speakers that I could install that I had purchased for other systems but never had the time to install. I have a 6 1/2" MA Audio Synergy SY66C2 coax set, and a PPI 52.1 5 1/4" Carbon Fiber Coax set. I don't remember off the top of my head what either sounded like. Anyone have any experience with either of the two? I'll be installing one of them until after my daughter is born and I can afford a new component set.
