Question JL Sub Problem

i just got my two jl 10w3v2's in but the magnet is touching the back of the box and the speaker is approx 1/8 of an inch not flush (where it would be screwed in)...does the magnet flex when the subs hit or would it be ok if it didnt have room to move...just the face of the subs would flex...is this right? lemme know

i ordered my box from topedgeonline.com it holds two tens and goes the whole way across the back seat...thanks for your help

You really need a little bit of clearance from the magnet to the box. 1" or more is best but, you can get away with less. The 1/8" is more of a problem. The frame needs to sit right against the baffle in order to get an airtight seal. I would either consider adding a spacer if you have room without the sub hitting the carpet or look at another box or shallower subs.

I am putting in two 12w3v2's and noticed that they do not have a vented pole, which means less clearance can be had in the back of the box. JL Tech support said .25" would be fine. On my 12's the surround is .75" and the linear excursion is around .5". Good luck.

noles youll need to cut out the back of the box and put a plate of wood (MDF) over it. touching the back of the box will have your subs vibrate with a godawful annoying sound, youll think you bought some crappy audiobahns instead of JLs when you hear the buzz. the 1/8" is really bad, you really do need the seal

so if i cut out the back of the box...then there would be a hole...what is MDF? Im not sure there is room under the seat to make the little hump (where the magnet goes) any larger...but I DEFINATELY dont want some annoying vibration noise or anything like that...I want it to sound really clean....im thinking of getting a 1/4 inch spacer to extend the sub a little closer to the carpet...surely there is enough free space for that...so the magnet doesnt really move? just vibrates? does anyone have the phone number for JL audio? thanks again guys...I really appreciate all the help!

If you add the spacer...be sure to use the (or see if it will work) w3v2 grille. If it fits under the seat with the grille on (w/o too much pressure on the grille), you will be fine. The grille will make sure you are not slapping the surround on the carpet when the sub is in action.

Adding the spacer on the back should work too. A lot of prefab box companies offer the added depth to their boxes and do the same thing. I did it to the box I built.

MDF = Medium Density Fiberboard

If the pole isn't vented, I wouldn't worry too much about rear clearance. Thermal expansion would be the only worry. 1/4" is probably more than enough.

If it were mine, I would drop a router in the box and take out a circle that is about .25-.375" deep for clearance for the magnet. OR, I would make a ring shaped spacer to move the sub out of the box a little bit with .25" masonite. Just seal the ring to the box.

You can get masonite at home depot for like $2 in a 2x2' sheet. Just ask for it. I think its what they make pegboard out of if you know what that is. If not, its similar.

You may be able to get spacers, but it won't take much to make your own. The specs according to JLs site are 9.125 inside diameter and no more than 10.4 outside. A compass (the drawing type) is your friend.

If you want to go this route:
http://search.ebay.com/mdf-ring_W0QQ...sopZ3QQxpufuZx

Just seal it w/ wood glue or liquid nails.

My kicker L5's are right up against the back of the box and i have had no problems and no annoying noises. That does happen though, and it will sound horrible.

Make sure that if you do decide to use a spacer that it is on good, and air tight!

Yes, you might have a problem with getting the box totally sealed if you glue the wood to the carpet.
