subwoofer clearance in box

I was wondering how much space is needed between the back of the subwoofer magnet/pole vent and the back of the enclosure the sub is placed in. Is there a certain distance you "at least" need for the sub to properly breathe in the box? 1/2 inch? 1 inch?
I'm referring to a sealed enclosure.

Thanks

It should say the depth of the sub in the box specs. I would think 1/2" if it has a breather hole in the center of the magnet. Best to contact the manufacturer of the sub.

What sub are you talking about?

I'm currently using an Arc audio KAR svc 4ohm 12" sub.

My total mounting depth is about 7" or a little more and the MD of the sub is 6.5". I just want to make sure that the sub doesn't need more distance from the back of the box.
Sounds nice right now.

Bry, I sent you an email a while back to your ***.net address. Did you not get it?

As much space as possible in a case like this. Pros recommend 3" behind a sub with a vented pole piece, but that isn't always feasible in the auto environment. If you use common sense with your equipment, you should be fine with 1/2", especially the quality of Arc.

You should be ok with 1/2", but check and see what Arc recommends (or give them a call). It really depends on size of VC and magnet. 97f250 is right...be respsonsible and dont try to over drive it on purpose.

I sent you an email.

sub dilemma

Thanks for the replies guys. Got your email bryan, thanks.

Now onto my next problem. I think I've contracted a mild case of the new bug UPGRADITIS, that I have recently seen diagnosed on here. I think its better to have this than bronchitis, cellulitis, appendicits, etc, you get my picture. I don't think I'll need an antibiotic.

I now have a Memphis MC1000D just sitting in my bedroom. I am going to amp the other 2 speakers in my truck, (my rear clarion 6x8) which are currently running off my HU, all to my RF 4 channel. I will place the Memphis on the sub. So now all speakers are amp'd, but I will only pull 300 watts approx from the amp running at 4ohm. I need a dual 4ohm vc speaker to run the amp at 2ohm so the sub will receive approx 600 watts.

I don't have a problem with my 12" ARC Kar SVC, I just want a little more performance.

I have pondered the Treo's, Ascendant, Adire, Dayton, SoundSplinters, RE's, Kickers, ARC, etc. I have no clue which one to go with. Want to get one for about $150.00. Will resort to ebay if I must.

I need to stay around 6.5 inches max mounting depth. If I do exceed that, could I just add an extra circular "LIP" of 5/8 or 3/4 MDF to the exisiting sub
enclosure to make sure I don't slam the sub against the back of the box and keep at least 1 inch distance from the pole piece?
This is going in a regular cab, so the looks aren't an issue, but it will be attached to the box securely with liquid nails and screws.

Any suggestions guys?

Thanks for any help.

Rob

Any of those subs should work ok (although, I'm not a big fan of kicker). Just make sure you set the gains properly if the amp is rated more than the sub (nothing wrong w/ some headroom). I wouldn't add the ring unless there's no other way.

Good luck getting over the bug.

If I had to add the ring, what would be the downfalls? Might not be secure enough to the box? Would it affect the sound?

BTW, I read in another post you might going to the IDMAX subs??

Downfalls...the secure thing, hard to use t-nuts (big fan of those now), will add a little box volume but not too much, won't look very good (unless it's hidden).

I think you can find plenty of subs to fit. Soundsplinters are nice subs. IDQ are real nice too.

Yeah, I'm thinking about IDMAX. Just need to sell my Treos first for the money.
