Speakers commonly called coaxials are a 2-way. 3-ways are also called triaxials, and 4-ways have even been called quadraxials. About 25 years ago the Jensen Triaxs ruled. Technology has come a long way. All the name denotes is how many separate drivers there are in the speaker system. It also employs a crossover network to filter and separate frequencies to go to the proper drivers in the system. Speakers referred to by these names are made into a one piece unit for ease of installation. A "drop in" replacement for stock is the idea. Some of the low priced speakers of these types can be pretty bad. The crossover network is usually a huge reason. The whole concept of a one piece drop in unit just doesn't leave room for quality parts to be used in places where it could be if space limitations weren't an issue.

What type you should get depends on how much you value your listening experience, how much you want to spend, and what the rest of the system will consist of. There are a lot of variables to consider.
