Center Channel Question

I am about to do my center channel setup for my 5.1 system and was wondering: Could I use just the mid from a component set? Since the center channel is mostly vocals, would I have to use the tweeter? Thanks for any help.

it would be best to use the whole component set. 70% of a 5.1 movie comes from the center channel. and not just vocals.

Have you seen Kenwood's center channel speaker? It looks like it is some what omnidirectional for that application.

Here you go.

styxnpicks...Point well taken. I am going to go ahead with the extra effort to mount the tweet.

thrill....When I am done, I will have all 5 speakers match. Each channel will be a Rainbow Contour component. Thanks for the info though.

Dcon, I understand wanting to keep the same speaker all around.

Those Arc Audio amps, I have been thinking of those. How long have you had them? Are you as impressed with them as everyone else seems to be? I have never heard of Rainbow speakers. Just took a look at them. Could you give me some feedback on them? That profesional line, they seem to be pretty proud of those bad boys.

x2. Plus some vocals can get pretty high.

I own 5 Arc XXK amps. To say I love them is an understatement. The best amps I have owned. The only thing I might consider switching to (if I ever switched), would be Zapco C2K. You can not go wrong with the XXK.

The Contours I have are no longer made. They were by no means there top speaker. But, they sound fantastic in the kicks. And for what I paid for them, they are a steal. I have 3 full sets and only have around $400 in them. I have heard nothing but good about all the Rainbow lines. Top notch all the way.

Bartak...Thanks for the reply. I am putting the tweeter in as well. I will try to post some pics real soon. It is looking great. Hopefully, the sound will match the look.

I got the center channel installed and it sounds good. Have not got to do a lot of listening and tweaking but, I think it is going to work out great. Blows the Pioneer surface speaker away.

I still have to figure out what to cover the MDF with. I may just try to paint it to try and match the trim.

Pics?

Sorry, I was late on this...but, in HT a rule of thumb is to have the same timbre match on all you speakers (except the sub of course). Styx is right...most of the movie is from the center channel.

Couple of pics here: http://www.sounddomain.com/ride/2130076/1. It is not perfect but, came out pretty good for the amount of time it took. I machined the MDF on a CNC mill so the tweeter fits perfect in the hole. The mid is mounted from the bottom and the grill is press fit in to a groove cut out with a 1/8" end mill.

The sound is awesome. No comparison to that Pioneer surface mount or even the Alpine single din in my Honda Pilot. The front sound stage on movies is just incredible now. Next is to see about squeezing components in to the rear doors.

Looks pretty sweet man. Nice and clean looking, I likey.

On a side note, how do you like those Q kick panels? I would like some kick for my new comps (doors suck) and I dont know the first thing about glassing, so I was looking a little at these. Pretty good quality? Are they IB or enclosed?
Sorry for the offtopicness (is that a word)

Thanks for the props on the center channel.

Personally, I love the Q logic kicks. This is the first set of them I have ever owned. I was always a little skeptical of putting the speakers that way. But, I have to say: Right now, my truck is the best sounding install I have ever done. And I have done a lot. The front sound stage just sounds awesome. Everything is in front of you and high up on the dash. I never thought these things would be able to do that.

They are a little flimsy but, work good for my 5 1/4. I do not think I would want to put anything heavier in them without some reinforcement. They are an open back design. When mounted it does provide a somewhat sealed but nowhere near totally sealed. To me, it was probably one of the best car audio investments I have ever made.

It really was not hard to do. I could probably make another. Took me maybe an hour or so. But, each one would need to be custom made to the exact speaker sizes in order to have the press fit.
