Twelves generally play louder and lower, while tens play slightly higher and may seem more punchy, when comparing the same sub of different sizes in a similar environment. Its all basically preference, i would listen to both sizes and make your own opinion, then buy a sub you like in that size.

I would like a sub that works well with the drum beat in any given metallica song...the kind that hits quick and goes away fast....not much of the rap stuff.Crisp and hard.....

Then maybe go with 2 8s or 1 or 2 10s, I would look at more SQ based subs jl, Image Dynamics, elemental designs, etc..

I perfer 10s. I have two kicker solos. Love them. They hit as hard if not harder than any others out there, good for all types of music, from blues and jazz to rap and metal. The only drawback is that they need a whole pile of power to make them sound good, and you have to raise the rear seat to make them fit. A side note 2-8"=1-10", 2-10"=1-12" that is not exact but pretty close

Its all personal preference pretty much. Whatever fits in the space you have and your price range.
You box will make a BIG difference in how it sounds. A 15 can sound just as 'punchy' as a 10-just get your box right. Now, getting a 15 in a reg. cab might be a little tricky, I just used that as an example, but then again a 12 might be a little hard to fit in also.

Im thinking as I write this, if you have an 04+ fitting 12's might not be that hard, there is a bunch of room back there.

I have a pair of Ascendant Atlas 12's in a sealed box, 1.8 cu. ft. per sub and its pretty punchy and nice sounding. I listen to Metallica sometimes and I'd say they the Atlas's do a pretty good job. Crisp and hard, just like you want it.

Id do an 8 or a 10.

Let me know. I have some JL 10s from my old car (used for 1 year) and some kicker stuff I would let go for cheap.

Along with some amps.

thanks for the info guys ...Ive got a monoblock amp doing 400 watts rms at 2 ohms...Im down to either a kicker comp vr 10 or 12.Im going to build an enclosure and 1.5 cubic feet should be no problem ...maybe a little more.I really like the idea of one sub. Less hassle, space , and money.
