Dual JL 8's in a custom box

I have come to the belief that my only recourse for getting subs in my screw is to downsize to dual 8 inch subs. I have seen some of the prefab boxes and Im not impressed. I was think about the stealthbox, but it's a plastic enclosure. So Im off on a mission to built a box with dual 8's. Mathimatically, there is more cone surfac than a 10 or 12, thus the ability to push more air.

Your thoughts?

Here is link for some great speakers that will fit nicely under your seat. Weather you go with 10's or 12's. I had one 10 under the back seat and went into a local dealer asking about a little more bass. They said they came up with a box design that would house 2 12's under the back seat and angle slightly out under the seat. The box for the 10's would not even be seen and look just like the ones on music moose. They gave it a shot and they sound great. The box came out exceptable and I was amazed at the sound quality with such a small box. If you want I could post some pics to show you.

Ive got tons of ROOM!!!

Well im hoping to get pics working tomorrow. I opted to buy another 40% bench and intalled it myself to allow for two 12's and an amp to be encorperated in my own custom box as a center console type thing.

If interested ill post the pics right onto this thread when ive got em up and running.

Lataz,
-Patrick

Basically, you just have to compare two 8s vs one 12, being that both are the same model sub. Otherwise a nice 12 will rape two average 8s in excursion and power handling, thus displacing more air. Obviously it wouldnt be fair to compare a 12w7 vs two 8 kicker comps. I would just port your box for the 8s and they should sound nice. Honestly what model jls are they? For the money its hard to beat re8s from re audio, they are only about 50 bucks a peice, and need .25 cubes sealed and .5 cubes ported, with less than 4 in of mounting depth. Search for the great 8 comparison on www.soundillusions.net. Also check out the ID8s or IDQ8s.

The RE8s are definitely potent little subs... great bang for the buck with very decent SQ and output. I'm going to install 2 sealed in my dad's ExCab SuperDuty... will let you know how that sounds once I get it in.

Are you sure that you will have 1.5 cubes per sub? That mockup is a good one, but seems a tad small. You also have to take into consideration the physical volume that each sub will take up also.

Would 4 8's fit? 8's don't need that much airspace. If you're looking for more bump it might be an idea. Most amps will handle a 2 ohm load in 2 channel. My wife's car has one 8" sub that uses the trunk for a box and it sounds pretty good, but it won't rattle anything. Better than no sub at all.

no dice on 8's

Its 17 inches wide so 4 8's wouldnt work. Ive thought about just getting one really nice 15 but not sure how clean its gonna sound.

I was under the impression that the suggested mounting volume is the size box you put the sub into, and not the left over volume after installation.

Also any thoughts on thickness of MDF im gonna need. Is anything more then 3/4" just overkill?

Please correct me if im wrong on that.

You have room for a 15!? If that's the case I'd throw in a 12 and be done with it. I have a 15 and it's kinda tough to get tight bass out of it. I got it way back when because I wanted huge boom for Rap and similar music. I've heard 15's that sound good but they had massive amounts of power. A 12 will give a better punch.

Yeah, 3/4" is good. Personally I built a box for my 15 with 5/8" and it worked well. If the box is fairly large you can put braces across the inside to make it more rigid. Then stuff it with some sort of material like egg crate foam or pillow stuffing. People have their preferences. I've found with the 15 that the foam used to make seat cousions worked the best. I used an old comforter that used the pillow stuffing on my last box. It sounded pretty good.

So negative on a 15, that was what i was thinkin too

but see thats the thing, ive been looking at 2 12's and im not sure if its going to be too tight of a fit. I could settle for only one 12 if i hear that i dont have the space for em, but two would just be so much better.
