2005 SCrew Sub box anywhere but under back seat?????

New here, great board . I have tried to do lots of reading before firing off a myriad of questions but haven’t seen anything that has to do with....

<drum roll please>

Putting a sub anywhere but the back seat floor board. I have two boxers that would sorely object to me taking up any space back there but I would like to have at least one 10" sub go in. My truck is an XLT, thus I do not have the fancy center shift setup, and from what I can tell, there should be plenty of room in front on the center console to put a sub. Even if it meant loosing space in the center storage comp., that would be fine. There seems to be a lot of plastic just under the cup holders in the dash, and a lot of open carpet space btwn the dash and the console....

Has anyone seen anything like this? Remotely?? Or maybe a custom box from someone reputable in the Houston area would do the trick....

Thanks for any input.

I think you would be looking at something custom in that area but, it could be done. The only off the shelf item I can think of is a Stealthbox. I am not sure if it would fit but, they make one that either goes in or replaces the center console area. You could check out www.jlaudio.com for more info. I am not sure if it fits a 2005 however but, it might work.

depending on what you are looking for exacly, you could prolly put a squar 12 in a box on the floor in the back right behind the center consoul in the center. where as both rear passengers feet would be seperated by a speaker box...i thought about this but im going with 2 10s under the rear seat...

I've got a stealthbox by JL. Great looking box...so stock looking in fact when I go to show it off people first ask where it is, and secondly if it is stock.

So your stealthbox, is it where the front middle console is? Or were you just reinforcing the previous post about the stealthbox in the rear?

Thanks for the input guys. The thing I cant do, is put speakers anywere in the back cab as this would significantly reduce the area my two boxers (55lbs & 86lbs) have to get comfy. They come first for us.

I have checked out the JL site, and it seems they made a front center console unit, but not for the 2005 Screw. Maybe i missed something.

Is anyone of the opinion that I could have a decent box made to take up the space directly in front of the front center console, taking into account that there is probably some space to be had below the ashtray near the floorboard?

I really wouldnt mind giving up the storage space in the center console, but if I could do this without loosing all of it, that would be ideal.

Again, thanks for the input.

For the right price, a high end shop can build an enclosure almost anywhere. Your best bet would be take it to a shop with your ideas and see what they say. It can be done and end up great. You just have to find the right shop to do it.

If you have a center console this is what I would do. I have thought extensively about this application.

You can get another console on E-bay for about 50 bucks. There is a ton of room in there. I would cut out the storage area and go as far forward as you could. The build you a box in the open space in the console. You could have the speaker facing towards the back with a good grill over it. You could use particle board for the box itself. When you cut out the new console use cardboard to mock up the pieces that would fit in there then trace them on the particle board. It would eliminate the center storage but would be killer.

Thats right along the lines of what I was thinking. All except the direction of the woofer. I would imagine down firing would sound best, especially for the two people sitting in the front seats...

Good sugg. about picking up a spare center console on ebay, that way I dont have to hack away at the one in the truck, can work on it without driving around with a big *** hole in my cab...

So, if I were to pick up an extra front center console would you suggest keeping most of the orig. shape except for the front side? I would imagine that it would be pretty easy to punch though the front side, heading toward the dash, and uncompass this space withing the speaker box....

So, do you have any ideas as to what the guts of the box want to look like? Im sure theres more to it than just building a tight box. Bracing, fill, wires....

Anyone know what kind of cubic feet would be needed for say, a 10" JL. Well, for that matter, anyone know a good speaker box fab. in the Houston area??

Mario - I realize you have a 2005, however, just to give you some ideqa of what can be done, here is what I did in my center console of my 2001, using an 8-inch sub:

Down-firing, made of MDF, coated with spray-in bedliner aerosol spray

Sub box mounted in center console inner shell

Dimensions of box

I was very surprised with the thump this thing puts out, especially being an 8" sub. Best thing is it is located in the center of the cab and it vibrates both of the front seats. Another good thing is I was able to give it enough airspace for the sub and yet still use the factory tray that goes inside the center console. Again, I know you have an '05, but you might be able to use some of this info to either build one or have one built.

Good luck!!!

LightningCrew, excellent info man. I really appreciate it. This seems to be the best fit for what I want, and the space that I need to preserve in the back seat area.

Would you mind if I pm / emailed you with a few more questions once I give this a bit more thought this weekend? I would really appreciate any advice you can provide seeing as how you have been down the road already.

So, the center console basically has and outer and inner shell? Once it was all reassembled, did either of the shells or anything else for that matter (sans your loose change ) rattle once you cranked the system up?

Again, thanks.

Lightningcrew that is EXACTLY what I had in mind.

R6 (I'm in between sportbikes, I'm riding a 78 750 Hondamatic,lol, its a classic)
I did some diggin on the console, there is some serious air ducts going to the back seat. This may be a huge obstacle to overcome. You may have to wind up having it side firing. I know this sounds odd, but the vent goes underneath and towards the back. Just an idea you may want to do some looking at the console.

I am gonna take some time to look at it a bit tomorrow, but im pretty sure I wouldnt have any air ducts to contend with. I see you have a Lariat, where as i only have an XLT. Mine doesnt have any rear seating a/c vents coming out of the middle console, or anywhere for that matter, so Im pretty sure there wouldnt be any ducts to get in the way....

Of course I could be completely wrong about all that... I wonder where I could find detailed info as to what exaclty is in/under the console. Maybe an exploded axonometric drawing or something.

Well, I have taken a few measurments and it seems that there doesnt seem to be enough room, width wise, to fit a JL 10W6V2 downward firing. The inside width of the console is a tight 10 1/4". Not even taking into account the width of the speaker box material, the driver is a full 10 1/2" wide....

Hmmmm....
