Cool what cheap amp vs sony amp

A friend of mine bought a cheap 800 watt kohlier amp. and some audiobahn 800 watt box combo for his camry and it delivers lots of bass. He paid like 150 bucks for that amp.. A 200 watt sony amp costs 200 bucks. I read things about distortion levels but what about wattage and bass power.. Do you think the sony amp can keep up? Also anybody know a factory made box that will sound good and fit in the S-Crew under the rear seat?
Sorry for the long post.. Just my friend thinks his system is "ALL THAT" and i want to use a sony amp .... help me prove him wrong guys

let me ring in. If you even see this since your post is a little old. Maybe you should ask questions at another site. www.ls1.com gets lots of traffic and you might get an answer. Anyway, there is a big difference between the maxium an amp could do and what it does. The rms rating matters. Also your friends set might sound good but is it really. You need to know what kind of bass you want and what music you listen to. When it comes to stereo equipment, you get what you pay for. Most people know or will learn it is not worth doing unless you do it right.

power ratings for car amps basically mean nothing; manufactures of cheap amps supercool them and run them at like 20 volts with a sine wave input signal for a split second to get the power numbers they advertise. I have a sony 200W amp that i got at a flea marked "as is" for $100... its worked very well for almost 4 years now... but sony is by no means a great amp; in fact i'm sure it'd be outperformed by a fosgate power series or phoneix gold amp rated at 40-50W... basically with car amps (and home amps) manufacturer reputation tends to be more important than advertised power. Go to any best buy and listen to a "500W" aiwa stereo or even a 100x5 generic sony/pioneer/technics/kenwood reciever (base model - all these manufactures make some good stuff that you can't get at best buy (sony ex, etc...). then go to a real stereo store and listen to a 30 or 40W krell, adcom, or even a good harmon/kardon or yamaha... you'll hear the difference.

Thumbs up

ColdSteel: Ask your question here:
http://www.clubknowledge.com/forums/...llation_Forum/

Site was erected by a small group of auto install/car audio Pros who know their
cookies. Trust answers from Trey, Swez, Mr. Brownstone or Jeff. This is also the
site you can lurk on and get educated fairly quickly about installs, wiring, speakers, etc.

Also, check out the jlaudio website for a box for your SCrew. Obviously, there are others, but JL makes a fine sub and has boxes designed specifically for our vehicles. I have the stealthbox for the center console and am quite pleased.
